Darren Ferguson confronted by angry Everton player for not bringing on Ashley Young’s son

Darren Ferguson was confronted by an angry Everton player for not bringing on Ashley Young’s son in the Thursday night FA Cup tie.

The Peterborough United boss defended himself after being criticised for making Tyler Young an unused substitute as they lost to Everton in the FA Cup third round.

Ashley Young was brought on in the 73rd minute, and had his 18 year old son Tyler been brought on by Ferguson, it would have been the first time a father and son had faced each other in the competition’s 154-year history.

Darren instead introduced Malik Mothersille as his final sub in the 88th minute.

Darren Ferguson on the Young situation: “It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench, I wanted him on, but I’ve got to get a forward on to get a goal. One of their players had a pop at me which was out of order. I had to do what was best for my team.”

He told reporters: “If the game had been 2-0 at that point I would have put him on, but it’s 1-0, I’ve got to get a forward on.

“We’re not a charity case, as much as I wanted Tyler to get on with his Dad.

“One of their (Everton’s) players had a bit of a pop at me, which is bang out of order.

“I’ve got to do what is best for our team and at that point, 1-0, I’m trying to get a result.”

Ashley Young made his feelings clear, posting on Twitter the morning after: “GUTTED…”

Goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Beto give Everton a much-needed confidence boost with a 2-0 victory over League One Peterborough, just three hours after sacking Sean Dyche; Armando Broja was taken to hospital with a serious-looking ankle injury.

“It has definitely been a difficult day,” said Baines. “A manager losing his job isn’t good and it normally follows a difficult period. Within all of that, there has to be hope and optimism.

“Things are changing at the football club with the ownership and new stadium. The manager has had to leave and that is not what anyone wants. There will be a new manager coming in and that brings opportunity.

“The football club is in a situation where it needs some stability and that was the message from the owners when they came in. Everyone would gladly accept that at the moment.”

Everton: Virginia, Patterson (sub Young 72min), Keane, Mangala (sub Lindstrom 88min), Ndiaye, Beto (sub Broja 67min, sub Doucare 88min), O’Brien, Mykolenko, Gueye, Branthwaite, Armstrong (sub Harrison 67min). Unused subs: Begovic, Leban, Butterfield.

Posh: Bilokapic, Dornelly (sub Odoh 76min), Nevett (sub Wallin 46min), Fernandez, Hayes, O’Brien-Brady (sub Mothersille 87min), Kyprianou (sub De Havilland 63min), Katongo, Collins, Conn-Clarke, Jones (sub Lindgren 46min). Unused subs: Blackmore, Young, Ihionvien, Sparkes.

Twitter users reacted as Darren Ferguson says he was confronted by an angry Everton player for not bringing on Ashley Young’s son…

@EvertonBlueArmy: What a miserable cunt Darren Ferguson is, took away every dads dream there of getting to play professional football with their son. Cunt.

@CFCButlin: Wasn’t winning either way. Good of benefited the club with positive media attention about making history.

@therealdaddymo1: Well, 2 truths can exist. He’s 100% right because he is the manager and it’s a professional football match. It’s not a kick about in your local park. However, everyone wanted the fairytale story of father playing against son so I get the outrage. But it is what it is.

@Liamripoldacc: Manager should be sacked on the spot

@TommyJRoberts: Bloody lad doesnt even normally get on our bench.

@hk7_538: In 2 years who would remember this tie and result? If the father and son played it would enter football all time history books. I’m so pissed I must sleep now or risk going to find that coach.

@lukejuanpywell: Why would we bring him on? We are still in the tie at 1-0 down anything can happen… I get the nostalgia but would have made no sense at all. Glad he didn’t for the sake of it. If we were 4-0 down I would have had no issues with him coming on.

@BradleyDSharp11: Irony of Ferguson not bringing young on for a couple of minutes to play against his dad, when the only reason Ferguson has a career in football, is because of his dad.

@_NickNFFC: If I were Tyler or Ashley I’d have decked Ferguson after the final whistle. Imagine depriving them a once in a lifetime moment in a tournament they were never gonna win. He definitely did that on purpose out of pure spite for the occasion and those watching.

@rstainbank: If I managed a team currently 19th in League One, I’d be looking for all the good PR I could get. Oh well.

@JarredFarmer: Hats off to Darren Ferguson for not conforming to the media circus. If the game was gone with minutes to go, I’m sure he’d have made the change, but we were still in it and needed a goal. Tyler Young wasn’t the best option in providing us with that #PUFC

@Otis_Fidel: Surely even as a Peterborough fan, you’d want to see him come on. Even if just in injury time. What a strange thing to deny a family and both sets of fans

@conor_200333: Disgraceful. Ferguson has just denied a once in a lifetime opportunity of young and son playing with each other even just for a few mins. I couldn’t live with myself if that was me. Bad form from him

@JulieHob1878: Darren Ferguson tho. Imagine not even bringing Tyler on for five minutes to make history. Miserable arse, like father like son

@TriggerPosh: Darren Ferguson did the right thing for Peterborough United. Not all about the media.

@TTOTC1: Can’t believe Ferguson didn’t give him a minute, it’s so rare to get the chance to share a pitch with your father, nearly impossible. I’m actually sad for them.

@Thirdand4ever: Darren Ferguson – quite literally has a football career because of his dad, yet denies Tyler Young the opportunity to play his. What a W⚓️

@TopToon99: Dick like his dad. Should of played young

@squizz32: He should be fired for not bringing Young on. Unforgivable.

@daveoldfield40: Disrespectful not at least putting the lad Young on, not surprised though tbh, all about the “Ferguson”

@smit112: Could have given Young one minute at the end. Useless

@natcliff4: Why’s everyone having a go at not bringing on young? He’s clearly not in the 1st team and never played for us in the league. There to fill the bench

@LeeCooper07: Ashley came on in the 73rd. Give the young lad just 5 minutes of stoppage time. Make history. Make the family proud. See something many of us will have never seen. Nah, you know what. I’ll stick, 👀🫠

@Redser702: Darren Ferguson without doubt the biggest bellend in football. Costing his own player a memory of a lifetime getting to play against his own dad. Just put him on for 5 minutes at the end Ironic as fuck considering the only reason Ferguson is in football is his own dad like
