Danny Rohl gives extraordinary press conference with relegation warning for Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Rohl gives a extraordinary press conference with a relegation warning for Sheffield Wednesday if things don’t change next season.

The Wednesday boss spoke following a 2-0 defeat to Stoke City, warning the issues behind the scenes, and also the current set of players could struggle for the 2025/26 Championship season.

Rohl expressed deep disappointment with his team’s recent form, highlighting a six-match winless streak that has extinguished their play-off hopes.

He stated that a “big group” of his players are “not able to play at this level” or execute his high-intensity, attacking style of football, making clear issues with quality and decision-making.

Despite the club’s safety from relegation this season, he suggested that without changes, they could face a major struggle next term.

Rohl also shouldered some responsibility amid speculation about his future, with links to clubs like Southampton and RB Leipzig, and ongoing tensions with owner Dejphon Chansiri, including issues over late wage payments.

“It is a big disappointment,” Danny Rohl said on his feelings regarding the game, as per The Star.

“How can I describe it? There are two things; at first we have to separate the last four or five results from the other 18 months. At the moment we are damaging our good work and I must say this. On the other side, the last couple of weeks, some players showed they are not able to play my style of football.

“You speak about quality, decision-making; if you want to improve as a club, you have to do a lot of things right in the summer, otherwise – and this is what I will tell you – next season will be a big, big fight to stay in this league because we have a big group of players that are not able to play at this level with my football. I must say this directly. I have protected my players again and again, I take responsibility and I give chances. But the result is not what it should be. I demand not special things, these are basics.

“You see that maybe we overachieved in the last 18 months. Until matchday 40 we played for a play-off position, but maybe now we see just what we did to bring this group so far. I have some fantastic players, but all in all it will be hard work for the summer.”

Performances since the struggle of players left being unpaid for March have been poor and asked whether that had been a driving factor in their downturn, Röhl said the issues were far wider.

“Yes. But I am also part of this story. Look since January, everything that happens, all the things around. We tried to push this away but maybe if everything is positive energy on and off the pitch, maybe the big moments go in our direction. The second half of the season has gone more in the other direction. We will find reasons off and on the pitch, I could make the last part easy that since this problem we had (paying players late), we couldn’t win.

“But the bigger picture is that we had a good first half of the season, we had some good performances in the second half, but now you see what Championship football means.”

On if his own future was a contributing factor in a possible lack of focus or hunger from his players, he chose not to open up more on that, but instead felt that didn’t matter, that intensity should have been higher and standards have dropped with the club all-but safe from relegation.

“It is everything,” he said when being asked for more detail on the reasons for the a dire second half to the season. “It is a summary. I am not looking for excuses, but I saw some things in December when we won games. I saw things in the first half of the season. For me it was clear, to have a good opportunity then you have to do something.

“I am a part of it, I will take this because I am the manager in front, I have to speak every week to you, I have to try to explain. At the moment it feels very sad about what we are doing. We did a lot of things right, but now we drop, drop, drop. It is not a good time, it is the first time since I came here that we didn’t win in six games. But this is the process of the group. Take these notes of what I said today about how tough it will be next year.”

“It’s tough. We spoke a lot this week about what we want to change and how we want to play, that we have to do our basics right, and how we want to be hungry for the last games. I’m very disappointed from some individual performances today,” Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“I always help them and try to improve them but some players showed today they are not able to play at my level.

“It starts after three minutes with one situation and from that moment I knew it would be a tough first half. It’s not what I want to see.

“It’s hard. Two weeks to go but such a finish after 18 months where we were very successful together makes me sad.

“We cannot play at just 80%. This group needs 100% to get something otherwise we have not the quality in every position.”

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday is being linked with Moroccan billionaire Anas Sefrioui, according to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Sefrioui, 67, is reportedly the general president of corporate enterprise Addoha Douja Promotion, said to be one of the wealthiest men in Africa, with net worth is £1.2billion, according to Forbes.

It’s written that he has hired a legal firm to look at potential football investments, and that there is also interest in the Owls from America and Europe at this moment in time.

Twitter users reacted as Danny Rohl gives an extraordinary press conference with a relegation warning for Sheffield Wednesday…

@RocketOwl1986: Danny Rohl saved us from the impossible. He has then taken the same group to flirting with the playoffs until the chairman didn’t pay the squad and things have derailed. It’s his very actions and calling Chansiri out helping to turn the tide!! Do not turn on Danny Rohl. Anyone trying to smear Danny Rohl imo has hidden intentions. The bloke has done a truly brilliant job in quite often toxic circumstances. Without Danny Rohl we’d be having all this drama in league one. Remember that #swfc fans. Chansiri Out!

@jdnthe8th: People slagging rohl the man that worked miracles last year. Granted we’ve been wank but fuck me everything wrong with this club comes down to one man. Doesn’t matter who the manager is. #swfc

@MatthewCla94603: He is correct we need more quality and some players aren’t up to it, he shopped in the bargain bucket in the summer , most signings were gambles(kobacki, ingelson etc ) the others were champ journeymen, only beadle/charles/ugbo had the required quality.

@bridboo80: He’s right, surprised the amount of people having a go, has everyone forgot what a total clown DC is, and how he behaves in fans forums? Imagine having to work with that? and we probably don’t know the half of it.

@OSimpson96: Fully agree with everything he’s said. He has massively overachieved with the squad we’ve got (including injuries). Since the Derby, this is the proper level for the majority of these players. Hes worked wonders. Now he needs better players to make the next step.

@IanLines4: He’s not going to get anywhere near the funding to purchase the quality of player that’s required……. if he’s still here.

@tonyowlsfan: He’s sort of right though we’ve massively overachieved with a league 1 team. Our best players are over the age of 30. If we had the budget I would clear most of them out.

@tsav1867: Forget last season. Rohl’s biggest achievement at Wednesday is for (finally!) opening the fans eyes to the fact that the club is in dire need of structural change. #swfc

@F_SWFC: Anyone else feel ridiculously out of love with the club at the minute? Feel like I dislike everything about us currently, including Danny Rohl now #swfc

@jakerowl1: The latest divide in the fanbase is going to be the Rohl situation. We can’t let that happen as (at the minute) it’s largely irrelevant. It’s not good enough from top to bottom but the root cause of most of our problems is as always, the chairman. #swfc

@relfmj: Yes Rohl hasn’t covered himself in glory but if you can’t see how the whole situation stems from the chairman then you need to think again. #swfc

@QPR_Ryan21: It’s weird how Danny rohl acted yesterday so dismissive of the players and almost throwing them under the bus for what I would say is an average season whereas Marti is the opposite and that is something that most managers don’t have that is really important in my opinion

@SamTheOwl7: Firstly obviously Chansiri is the issue at the moment. However, Rohl has still underperformed based on what we saw he could achieve last season with a worse squad. It’s his job to get the best out of the players and in recent weeks he hasnt done this. #swfc
