Daniel Farke admits Leeds players are embarrassed by defeat to young Sheffield Wednesday side

Daniel Farke admits his Leeds United players are embarrassed by the defeat to a very young Sheffield Wednesday side.

Following a 1-1 draw in normal time, Jamal Lowe saw his shot come back off Karl Darlow’s legs and spin over the line for the opener, then Jayden Bogle levelled late on.

The Carabao Cup Second Round tie had to go to a shootout to be decided, with Leeds going on to miss all three of their penalties, Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Ethan Horvath the hero, making key saves and stopped two penalties, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin also blasted his over the bar.

Have a watch of the highlights, also some vlogging videos have emerged from Leeds fans, which include the chants…

Owls fans urged to boycott game by Supporters’ Trust in protest against club owner, with the final attendance figure announced to be at 7,801. Read more on this HERE.

Chants from Leeds fans came back to haunt them as Sheffield Wednesday had the last laugh with their win.

@joshlufc91 uploaded a video of a chant sung by those in the away end: “You laughed at us, now look at you”.

Leeds fans were also heard singing, “there’s only one Chansiri”…

Rob Staton said: “Leeds United fans started the night chanting the name of Dejphon Chansiri. They ended the night heading for the exits before the penalty shoot-out was even over. Sheffield Wednesday fully deserved to go through. Ethan Horvath a hero saving two pens. Big night #SWFC”

After the game, Sheffield Wednesday under 20’s taking the piss out of Leeds on their Snapchat stories after knocking them out.

Rio Shipston captioned his post: Premier league ahahahhahah 😂”

Ike Ugbo was also in good spirits, also posting on Instagram.

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, said to Sky Sports: “Incredible night. We knew it was going to be a tough match, but all credit to the boys in front of me. We dug in, and I couldn’t be prouder of the boys.

“All credit to the boys and this young team. I have only been in a couple of days! Yes, I did do my part, but they did their part.

“I have been in the door four or five days. I had to learn 10 new names in the first match I played and in this game I had to learn another 10 new names.

“Whatever happens if we go behind or go in front, we stick together.”

Sheffield Wednesday youngster Cole McGhee, also spoke to Sky Sports: “It’s honestly unbelievable making my debut in such a big game. It’s what you dream of as a kid.

“The gaffer is a genius tactically and he gave us a set plan and you can hear him on the sideline coaching us through it.”

Leeds boss Daniel Farke, speaking to Sky Sports: “Congratulations to Sheffield Wednesday.

“A Premier League side is the favourite and the Championship side is more or less the underdog. It was just this type of football game where we had more than 85% possession.

“Somehow they managed to be one time in our box, and somehow they have scored. Yes, we have simply missed too many chances.

“I have never seen Joel Piroe miss a penalty, but he is the first one that goes and misses. It happens sometimes in football. Sometimes this type of game is written in the stars. They have fought very hard and somewhat deserve to be in the second half.

“They’re all professional football players and it is not like we played an under-21 side. We were the favourite today, there is no doubt about it, but this happens quite often in a cup game.”

Farke on Dominic Calvert-Lewin missing chances and his penalty: “Three chances he had in the game. I am happy he has the chances as he shows his instinct again. For him it is like a little pre-season. He desperately needed minutes today to build up his fitness.”

Farke also said: “We have to take all of the criticism and we are self-critical because out of all the chances we should put four or five goals to bed.

“It’s always a bit annoying and you feel a bit embarrassed as a Premier League side, but we have been involved in so many games on this level, especially in the cup – this is why there are so many surprises and shock results.

“Even the team in the lower league can win such a game. Today was one of those days and congratulations to Sheffield Wednesday.”

When asked to give a message to the Leeds fans, Farke replied: “You can feel for them. We’re sorry anyhow. We feel a bit embarrassed that we don’t go through in such a game. We can just say ‘sorry’ because they made the trip and wanted to celebrate.”

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen, speaking to Sky Sports on how he feels: “Proud. Really, really proud. How they stayed together, I’m just proud.

“Yesterday we trained our defensive stuff, our 5-3-2 and our goal kicks and high press, but we didn’t use it much. The tactical discipline the boys had today was incredible. On a day like today we need a bit of luck and we had a fantastic goalkeeper.”

On if he was surprised with how his young side performed: “It could be easy to say no, I’m not surprised but of course they stepped up so much in a game like this, nobody could see that, so big respect to our boys.”

On the feeling in the dressing room: “They are proud and the senior players are very proud of the young players and the players who were not in the squad were here to support the players. The biggest smile was from the senior players because they are proud of the young guys.”

On if this win gives him hope: “It gives me not only hope but belief. How we are together off the pitch and on the pitch, it’s a good, strong group. It’s shown me that the culture is very strong and gives me belief.”

He also said: “We knew we would not have the ball so much, but how big passion, how big discipline, how much belief they played this defensive game today.

“It was amazing and of course you need a little bit of luck in a game like today’s, but our goalkeeper (Ethan Horvath) was amazing today.

“I’m really, really proud with how much discipline, with how much passion they played.

“It was also again amazing to see the reaction from the senior players who were not in the squad, how they were before the game, during the game, after the game and how happy they were for the young boys.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Daniel Farke admits Leeds players are embarrassed by defeat to a young Sheffield Wednesday side…

@Zak_Allen: Not even fussed about the cup or losing to Wednesday. But Farke’s tactics screamed “unprepared”. Even the players lacked belief when they took the pens. We played like it was a training match. No fight or conviction. To arrogance of thinking we can press high and play slow patient football. And it failed. Miserably. Against a team who may be young, but were actually prepared for a battle.

@pickers8: Sack him now please 🙏, picks his favourites and doesn’t pick the better players. Got away with it last season, get him out to give us a chance this season. No im not overreacting

@LeedsLoudHaler: #lufc Full credit to #SWFC tonight . Your kids were brilliant and i hope your club survives under new ownership asap .

@LewisDeighton17: Fair play, that is one of the most embarrassing nights I’ve ever had as a Leeds fan. Disgrace. #LUFC

@Samuel_JMurray: Farke needs to go now, as does the recruitment team new players look average at best. Sideways backwards football with no urgency to go forward. The new players attitude was dreadful. Picking aaronson over ramazani and picking Harrison makes no sense. Lose heavily to Newcastle 🤔

@NateLufc1:
Shambolic performance.
Only started going for it when going 1-0 down.
Our new number 9 missing sitters left right and Center.
BOTH 9s missing pens.
Not one pen scored in the shootout.
My oh my leave the bus there, let them walk back 😂😵‍💫

@SorareLeeds: I hate so many things about #lufc right now starting with Paraag, absolute bell end who loves himself and like previous owners, talks shit. Farke, clueless cunt out of his depth. The majority of our squad, simply not good enough and need replacing. All fuck off, please

@T9LUFC: No one can defend Farke’s post-match interview. After a terrible, terrible game like that, I want to see a honest overview from our manager. If he is being honest in how he thought the game went. Then we’re in serious trouble. #lufc

@LeedsXtra_: This is what happens when you leave your transfer activity too late. You miss out on your top targets and settle for sub par injury prone two bit players who are no better than what we already have. #LUFC

@DavidJacksonCr1: That interview with Farke is why we won’t progress under him. He should come out and say it’s not acceptable and tell us he’s put a rocket under everyone of their backsides. Instead it’s just excuses and acceptance of mediocrity which then filters through the club. #lufc

@JoshuaDaniels25: Absolutely brilliant achievement by Sheff Wed tonight 👏👏👏👏! Love or hate them you have to respect how they are playing this season in such crazy circumstances!! #SheffieldWednesday #SHWLEE #LUFC #CarabaoCup
