Current England Footballers Who Could Represent a Different Nation

In many cases in the modern game, footballers have chosen to represent nations not aligning with their birthplace, whether it is choosing to represent a nation they moved to or have a deep rooted connection through ancestors. Players changing nations is not a new phenomenon, with former England legends like John Barnes not actually being born in the country.

Just like switches in the mobile gaming sphere, from online slots to live casino games for example, some players may choose to represent a different nation for a change in experience that appeals to them more. With that being said, let’s take a look at some players in the current England squad who could have chosen to represent a different nation.

Cole Palmer

Cole Pamer was born and raised in Manchester, spending his entire youth football journey at the rivals of his boyhood club, Manchester City. The English forward grew up in Wythenshawe, representing the local club at the youth level. Since then, Palmer had impressed massively at Manchester City, forcing Pep Guardiola to make the youngster a first team player even during the club’s years of dominance. After winning the FA Cup, Champions League, Super Cup, and Premier League, Palmer set his sights on Chelsea and took a gamble in an attempt to progress his career.

After signing in 2023, not only did he impress the Chelsea fans and even football supporters around the world, but he also caught the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate, offering Palmer his first team call up and senior debut. However, if Palmer so wished, he could have changed allegiance and chosen to represent St. Kitts and Nevis. With a population of less than 50,000, Palmer could have represented the Caribbean nation through his father’s side of the family. Fortunately, Palmer chose England and is continuing to impress on the world stage.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Widely considered one of the finest full-backs in world football, his extraordinary passing range and remarkable vision have made him the most prolific assister among defenders in Premier League history. He also once had the option to represent a different nation instead of England. Born in Liverpool, Trent appears to be a scouser through and through, supporting Liverpool throughout his childhood and spending over 20 years with the Reds. He quickly became a fan favourite after impressing Jurgen Klopp in 2016, when he made his Premier League debut.

Since then, he has gained a mural in Liverpool, made the number 66 iconic and won plenty of silverware during his time, including two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, an EFL Cup, a Community Shield, a Champions League, a Super Cup and a Club World Cup. In 2025, after lots of controversy, Trent Alexander-Arnold confirmed his long awaited move to Real Madrid, and while he tries to find his form again, he is still on the books at England. However, before making his senior debut, Trent could have opted to play for the United States through his grandmother’s side of the family. But due to being born in Liverpool, the star chose to represent England from under-16s to senior level.

Kobbie Mainoo

One of Manchester United’s most promising youngsters, Kobbie Mainoo, is a fan favourite at Old Trafford, as the youngster broke through the academy while impressing during his debut and his first international campaign with England. The Stockport born midfielder is one of many young talents to come through the academy at Manchester United, and since breaking through into the first team, played a crucial part in their FA Cup win in the 2023/24 season. The youngster continues to be recognised by England as a key player, and could potentially find his way onto the plane for the World Cup in 2026.

But despite England being so fond of the youngster, another nation could have claimed him as their own. Ghana were hoping to have the star on their hands, had Mainoo chosen to represent his parents’ roots. Although Mainoo was born in Manchester, both of his parents are Ghanaian internationals, which is often the country that players choose to represent. Thankfully, Mainoo chose to play for his birth country of England, being a massive figure in the midfield, potentially what England has been missing in their search for silverware.
