Crystal Palace fans display Saudi banner at Newcastle, demanding Premier League to take action

Crystal Palace fans decided to display a new Saudi banner at Newcastle United, demanding for the Premier League to take action.

The flag, which was held up from the Holmesdale Fanatics in the away end of St James’ Park, could be seen held up at kick off on Saturday afternoon.

It read:
“Mask has slipped
“PIF = Saudi state
“EPL – Take action”

This isn’t the first time that the Crystal Palace fan group had made their feelings known towards the Saudi owners of Newcastle.

Chants of ‘F… the Saudis’ can be heard in a televised game between the two sides, but as spotted by Newcastle United fan Ben Winthrop, there was a ‘slight’ inconsistency…

He wrote alongside a photo in January 2023: “Palace mob singing “fuck the Saudis” for half the game. Meanwhile on the advertising boards… 🤡 “

In 2021, Simon Jordan defended a banner displayed by Crystal Palace fans criticising the Newcastle takeover and new Saudi Arabia owners’ human rights record.

The £305million takeover by the Saudi Arabia-led Public Investment Fund led to a graphic banner held up by supporters in the Holmesdale End, highlighting the human rights issues in Saudi Arabia and criticising the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test.

Speaking about the protests from Palace fans, Jordan said in 2021: “I agree with the central theme. I think some of the language being used and the necessity for Palace fans to do it is troubling for me as it’s my old club.

“But if somebody doesn’t say something, who is going to say something?

“The idea that fans aren’t entitled to a voice when players are entitled to a voice – they are allowed to do gestures.

“If people believe the Saudi regime – which is a murderous regime – is allowed to wash itself through our sports, why shouldn’t they be allowed to say it?”

After that game, police said there would investigate any wrongdoing by the fans, but eventually took no action over it.

Palace supporters group Holmesdale Fanatics released a statement not long after the banner had been on display in 2021.

“The Saudi led takeover of Newcastle has rightly received widespread condemnation and anger,” Holmesdale Fanatics’ statement read.

“To give the thumbs up to this deal at a time when the Premier League is promoting the women’s game and inclusive initiatives such as rainbow armbands, shows the total hypocrisy at play and demonstrates the league’s soulless agenda where profits trump all.”

Back to this weekend’s game, Jacob Murphy scored and set up two more to give Newcastle their fourth Premier League win in five; Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson also got on the scoresheet as Crystal Palace disappointed; Newcastle move up to fifth while Palace stay 10th.
