Cray Wanderers baffled by ‘one of the most bizarre decisions from officials ever seen’

Cray Wanderers have been left baffled by ‘one of the most bizarre decisions from officials ever seen’ as they post footage to Twitter.

They played host to Canvey Island in midweek, winning the Isthmian League Premier Division fixture 2-1, but couldn’t work out why they had a goal disallowed in the second half.

As per their match report: “Cray were rather unfortunate not to score a third when Yahya Bamba got on the end of a pass to break into the area down the left to slot home but the goal was disallowed as it came after a Canvey player was offside and although the referee played an advantage the goal was chalked off for the earlier offside.”

Canvey Island said in their own report: “…a bizarre call from the officials denied the hosts a third. Despite a Canvey ball being played upfield and dealt with by a Cray defender, the linesman waved his flag for offside against the Gulls.

“The referee failed to notice this however, allowing Cray to counter and eventually score from the passage of play. The linesman’s flag remained raised however and after consultation with the referee, the original offside decision was upheld – meaning Cray’s goal was ruled out, much to their frustration and Canvey’s relief.”

And it seems it’s not the first odd decision to come from the referee…

Cay made it seven games unbeaten with Porter netting twice in the first half, and Sach getting Canvey Island what ended up being just a consolation goal.

Twitter users reacted with Cray Wanderers baffled by ‘one of the most bizarre decisions from officials ever seen’…

@trevk37: Absolutely unbelievable! @refsupportuk, can you explain why the goal was disallowed please because I can’t see a logical reason? 🤷‍♂️

@davethevalefan: He’s flagged for offside, not a foul , so surely he should have let the counter attack be the advantage and the goal to stand, as a perfect advantage given? Yea I’m a ref myself of 25yrs

@nfreelove: Sadly what no-one has mentioned is the time of the game ( 47 mins). This simply may be the case the teams have turned around and he’s flagged a defender. Not the first time a mix up like this has occurred. Ref hadn’t blown so the goal should stand

@Gandermonium: Don’t worry lads, this geezer will be fast tracked and be doing NL\FL before too long with shouts like that. 🙄

@robshrl: I was there and it was the most surreal reffing decision ever. The ref even ran with play and gave the goal, saw the flag and decided to disallow it.

@Owene2220: If he’s giving a foul then fair it’s harsh but is what it is. But there no way he’s flagging for a foul both of them had an embarrassing moment right there.

@TerryShrieves: Unbelievable. You can see him waving his flag at the end of the clip so I assume someone in the dugout said something so he got them booked 🤦‍♂️

@Liam_Hope1987: 🙈 No shock to see who the ref is here though.

@mattyrawlings9: Weird that. The ref clearly plays an advantage. And even if he didn’t, the offside player wasn’t interfering.

@JamaalEmanuel: Linesman wants to be main character and ref has completely folded under the pressure. Peak Sunday league.

@Lidds84: AR has given offside with the signal. Play has continued until the ball ends up in net at the other end. Advantage is to defending team who attack and score. Ref then raises arm in the air for IDFK and offside? Good goal unless I’m missing something. 🤔

@PhilTooley: Allowed by non-league’s own patented VAR system, a revolutionary on pitch system called Very Awful Referees

@AlexBarron1988: Ref needs to take control there and award the goal. Asst should have dropped his flag however when it was clear Cray had an advantage?

@SJ89Herts: I swear they weren’t even offside 😂 that’s such a mad decision.

@ToshBosh4: Yes the Ref ultimately is judge and jury on the night but the linesman on our side has to take most of the responsibility on what happened. He was so animated and vocal in fact screaming at the top of his voice his neck veins popping out at his colleague to make himself right 🤷‍♂️

@BaileyH04019330: Advantage played on, so nothing wrong with that! Absolutely bizarre

@sambanks1951873: Don’t worry to much, the officiating in this league is a joke.

@valleyman1973: Terrible decision. With the new rules on offside how can those two players be in an offside position as the cray player wins the ball. The referee should ignore the flag. The only thing he should be asking the linesman is ‘do you actually know the rules’ #shocking

@TomBeere: Yet another masterclass from the officials 😊

@TimGale8: I’ve watched this so many times, trying to work out what he’s flagged at. I believe he’s flagging for someone, not interfering, out of camera shot, how the officials have discussed it at length and still agreed it’s offside is laughable 😂 don’t help themselves.

@GaryJeffrey78: Like a scene from Benny Hill. Absolute shambles. The standard at all levels is disturbingly bad and the reason me and many others have fallen out of love with the game. Money from the top needs to filter down and get proper training to these clowns in the middle.

@toby_dellow: Doesn’t surprise me. The standard of refereeing in this country is ridiculously low, from Premier League to Sunday league

@CoachAWF: I’m pretty sure this is the worse decision ever leading to a disallowed goal in the history of football ⚽️

@fattomdaley: Good to see the Isthmian refs don’t change

@DavidCo15594164: Oh my god. For two of them to contrive that the advantage of playing on us not to have a goal, it’s to have a free kick 65 yards away is staggering. This’ll take some explaining. Not a mistake, it’s utter stupidity and incompetence but remember, no arguing.

@martinbridge59: Shouldn’t really surprise anyone. No clue how the game should work. Only interested in the rule book and their spin on it.
