Coventry fans slam article published by The Sun on former player Fankaty Dabo

Coventry City fans have taken to slam an article which was published by The Sun on the former Sky Blues player Fankaty Dabo.

The headline used for the piece was ‘COSTLY ERROR – Former Championship star who missed £100m penalty wakes up unemployed at 28 after being relegated from EFL’, while they said in a social media post that Dabo ‘ruined his career’.

It has left fans of his old club reeling, with a tweet put up by Coventry fans and Twitter user @TheScottKeene, captioned ‘F**k the Sun’ with a screenshot of the article put up by The Sun.

His post has gone on to get nearly 4,000 likes within 24 hours of putting it up, with many more users taking to criticise The Sun for ‘celebrating each others downfalls’.

The article talks about how Fankaty Dabo has woken up unemployed after being released by relegated League Two club Forest Green Rovers.

They point out how Fankaty Dabo missed a penalty in the 2023 play off final between Coventry and Luton, with the latter going on to win promotion to the Premier League.

To rub it in, The Sun issued a post doing a timeline of his downfall…

The Sun then added in a quote that came from Troy Deeney, who criticised Fankaty Dabo when he was in charge briefly at Forest Green.

Deeney said: “I said to him in front of everyone, six months ago, you had a kick to get to the Premier League. Now you won’t even get a game in the National League.”

The club meanwhile said in their statement: “Forest Green would like to say thank you to all of the players for their hard work.”

As mentioned, Coventry fans slam the article published by The Sun on former player Fankaty Dabo, this is what is being said on Twitter…

@Cj_covblaze: Awful paper. No idea why anyone buys it

@KEKWales: Since when does Troy Deeney write for the sun

@WayneEveri75947: Such a shame seeing Dabo’s rapid decline , hopefully he will recover and find a club. As for the Sun , I wish Guy Fawkes was still here , to blow up their production factory

@ibskyblue: Blows my mind some people still read that shit

@Charlieleahyy: Would 110% take him at wimbledon depending on wages. Feel bad for Dabo, looked like a real decent player for Cov. The sun always looking out to bring someone down like always the cunts

@BepSquare: The reason The Sun is called gutter press.

@MikeyPB: Scum newspaper 🤷‍♂️

@andycparsons: Dabo was not getting a new contract whether he scored or not. He was quality for us in lg1, our best player but then injuries caught up with him sadly

@JessBebb07: West Brom fan here but when we’d play Coventry he always looked like a very decent player, I’m sure he will find a new club soon

@2010EmmaE: God this is awful. Zero need for this story 😡

@RyanJWhelan: The Sun are fucking disgraceful. @TheSunFootball shove your paper up your arse 👍

@Deanohodgson7: Why do we now have this culture where we celebrate each others downfalls! Proper gone backwards in society! Although not surprised coming from this rag

@tomwestwood_: Feel very scouse right now

@HeyesBrand18193: Fuck the sun dirty lieing bastards 🙏

@_HVN_06: Fuck the scum

Darryl Powers: Ridiculous post and some ridiculous comments on here. Was a great servant to Cov over the years. At least he had the courage to take that penalty in one of the biggest games in football. Always a Skyblue Dabo all the best 🩵

Sean Anthony Smith: Nice for him to wake up & read isn’t it?! Typical sun newspaper.. kick a man when he is down. I hope he comes back & has a great season! From a Luton fan

Gil Cowlishaw: As expected given the source, terrible, lazy journalism. Dabo was already on his way before the playoff final, anybody could have missed that penalty, but the fact it was Dabo had nothing to do with his exit from Coventry. If anything can be said to have ‘ruined his career’ then it is the disgraceful public shaming he underwent from Troy Deeney in his short and disastrous attempt at football management at FGR.

Amanda Coyle: Nobody blamed Dabbo for that penalty miss. He put his heart and soul into that game and put them on the line with the penalty attempt. Great team player

Martin Richardson: He had an injury, i think hip. He was not the same player when he came back from it. He was already on the release list before he missed the penalty.

Darren Bovill: What’s the point in this post? And is it necessary?

Pete Parker:
Nice post. Idiotic: The Sun, hope you’re proud.

Kerry Blackaby: We still love you Dabo 🩵

Dan Moss: What about trying to be kind these days not kill the lads confidence etc – I’m not linked to him as a villa fan but all this stuff in the media has to stop –

Adam Neeves: Absolute garbage as per usual from this “newspaper” Dabo was being released anyway from Cov, Forest Green have been relegated so I’m guessing have released him as his wages won’t be achievable in non league. He’s well liked by us Cov fans, I’m sure he will find another club. Still a good player in League 1/2.

Andrew Wallace: Hasn’t ruined his career. The media is trying to destroy his career. He missed a penalty for us in play off final. It happens. He’s a cracking wing back and will have a team very soon. Stop trying to paint a picture you know nothing about!!

Nick Rogers: The Sun lost any credibility if it had any decades ago. Fanky has had a difficult past 2 yrs. That doesn’t define him as a man or his career. We speak new life into his career and not doom and gloom.

Martin Shaw: Headline not even close. He was being released regardless of missing the penalty or not. There’s still a good player in there for a football league club I’m sure

Craig Simpson: Its got nothing to do with his penalty miss.

Shaun Edward: Instead of lazy journalism making out that this lad is a poor footballer.. concentrate on the fact the player has been released twice due to the wages now being unaffordable 🙄 good luck for the future Fankaty Dabo, a quality RB 👍
