Coventry City have taken to delete an Instagram photo as player Milan van Ewijk clears up confusion surrounding a goal celebration.
After taking a 12th-minute lead through Romain Esse, Millwall faced a setback as Haji Wright scored two quick goals after the break, resulting in the Sky Blues taking the points.
Nevertheless, Coventry and their 23-year-old Dutch full-back faced some unexpected attention after climbing up to 6th place in the Championship table.
Once the match came to an end, a photo of Van Ewijk was shared on Coventry’s socials. However, it quickly drew attention due to the apparent gesture of saluting with one hand while using his finger to mimic a moustache.
The club had uploaded a photo of Milan van Ewijk doing the rather ‘unfortunate’ pose, before having it brought to his attention.
He then commented on the post, saying: “I got two celebrations mixed up.. please don’t see this as offensive!”

However, following after comments regarding it, the club took it down and subsequently put up another of him celebrating, much to the player’s approval.
He wrote in another comment on the post: “Yeah that’s a better pic ❤️🫶🏽”
There was further clarification it seems regarding the celebration, with @ArchCcfc saying: “Haji and Milan are one of a few members of the squad known to play it and here’s the celebration #PUSB
“Was a mario kart reference but as it says in the comments, everything can be took out of context #PUSB”
A Coventry spokesperson told SunSport: “Milan’s celebration was in regard to the gaming character ‘Mario’.
“Members of the Coventry City squad have been playing Mario Kart between themselves, which has started a friendly rivalry amongst the squad, as seen in our behind-the-scenes videos and recent celebrations at Norwich.
“Milan was putting his hand above his mouth to symbol Mario’s moustache from the video game.
“He also was raising his arm, copying the popular celebration his team-mate striker Haji Wright has done throughout his career.
“The club saw how the photo could be perceived without the context behind it, and as Milan quickly commented to clarify this, therefore the image was deleted.”
Prior to the game, Sky Blues scorer Wright spoke about how Van Ewijk was “big on celebrating”.
The USA international said: “He’s a fun guy to be around. A lot of jokes and a lot of fun.
“He’s a good player as well so he does make it easier for us.”

The game itself saw Haji Wright score twice inside three minutes to complete a Sky Blues’ comeback after Romain Esse put Millwall ahead after 12 minutes.
Haji Wright struck the post twice just 5 minutes in, before 18-year-old Romain Esse netted shortly after, on what was only his second league start of the season.
Torp’s free-kick was pushed onto the bar 20 minutes in as Coventry continued to push for an equaliser.
Luck looked to be going against them when Kasey Palmer saw his headed effort pushed off the line by a Millwall head just before the break.
Wright did manage to win a penalty and made no mistake from it, and then completed Coventry’s quick turnaround straight after.
Coventry went on the break from the back, with O’Hare slotted Haji in and he beat the goalkeeper with a cheeky strike to the near post.
