Courtois kisses Real Madrid badge at abusive Chelsea fans; Thiago Silva takes swipe at Todd Boehly

Thibaut Courtois kisses the Real Madrid badge at abusive Chelsea fans as Thiago Silva takes a swipe at Todd Boehly post-match.

Courtois scolded Chelsea fans for their disrespect after they heckled during Real Madrid’s 2-0 Champions League victory at Stamford Bridge, on Tuesday.

Madrid defeated 10-man Chelsea 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first quarter-final leg before knocking out the Premier League team.

Rodrygo’s brace of goals in the second half in the second leg pushed the Champions League holders into the semi-finals.

Courtois’ return to Stamford Bridge was greeted with insults and boos by the crowd. He had left Chelsea to sign for Madrid in 2018.

The 30-year-old Belgian international seemed to be the one who had the last laugh when footage of him kissing Madrid’s crest in the presence of Chelsea fans was released.

Thiago Silva criticised the Chelsea hierarchy after the team’s disappointing Champions League exit by Real Madrid on Tuesday evening and blamed the ‘indecision of the hierarchy’ for their west London side’s disappointing season.

The Blues currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League and are on their worst form since 1993. They have four losses across all competitions.

Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eg were criticised for an embarrassing dressing room speech given following the weekend’s loss to Brighton.

They are said by some to have singled a “senior” player out and disillusioned before the Tuesday match.

After the match, Silva took aim at the owners for their ‘incorrect move’ and stated that the downfall of the team could not be attributed to the managers alone – there are four at the moment.

‘I think the first step has been made. An incorrect step, but it has been made,’ Silva began.

‘We can’t be blaming the managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club, with a lot of indecision.

‘Change of ownership, new players arriving – we had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad.’

Silva commented about Chelsea’s 30-plus-strong squad. This was after it became known that, following the dismissal of Graham Potter, some players were forced to change in the corridors of Cobham due to an influx of new players in January.

The ex-PSG defender stressed that although this meant there were ‘amazing players’, there would always be some that were ‘unhappy’ with their playing time.

‘There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play,’ Silva went on.

‘The manager can only pick 11 from a squad of 30-something – that’s tough.

‘Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.’

Frank Lampard to BT Sport post-match:

“We played really well for 60 minutes and maybe it’s normal after the goal, at 3-0 in the tie we made some changes to go for it, it’s normal how the game pans out. But for 60 minutes, we had really good chances and at this level you get them, you have to take them.

“You don’t want to praise the performance too much when you lose at this level because it’s finite. It’s what it is but where we have been this season and what we are and what we have to work towards is a club who has been in this position and further many times.

“It wasn’t our night, some players will take that tonight and understand what it is at that level.

“The lack of goals is not for the want of trying. We got in the box, we got in loads of crossing positions, so I will never criticise the lads for that. But if you can’t take those chances, the game goes 2-1 at any point, you would have felt the crowd turn.

“The way we were playing, we were giving them a lot of problems on the sides of the pitch. It was the first game since I’ve been back where I feel we’ve really implemented them. That’s a must for us.

“It’s a mistake for us at the goal to give them that chance. You then look at maybe being more aggressive in the game. But if you look at those players who started, they’re fit and are in form.

“You’re playing for Chelsea, so regardless – every game you play you have to give everything. I’m not even here now for two weeks – I’m hungry, I won’t let anyone off the hook in letting the season run out.

“In the 60 minutes we were playing world-class opposition and we were the better team and had chances, that standard cannot drop. That’s the one message when the dust settles in-house.”

This is what fans had to say as Courtois kisses the Real Madrid badge at abusive Chelsea fans while Thiago Silva takes a swipe at Todd Boehly…

ON COURTOIS:

@cfcDar: Zero class as a human. Former club where he won multiple trophies went awol to get a move and slept with de bruyne’s misses

@arnoldpb73: Been booing him all night for wanting to go to a better club.

@tom46951230: That’s right keep disrespecting the club that made you a world class keeper thibaut

@chelcdot: yeah and he’s going to keep them in the tie tonight while our replacement for him is almost guaranteed a howler. levels to this.

@Topetals20: What’s the point when he will have the last laugh? It’s about time the fans move on!

@LNS7evin: I’m sure he’ll be crying in his mansion later, with his model wife and surrounded by his 17 trophies.

@jack_allstar23: Boo all you want. The man is leveling up while yall are sinking towards the drop.

@DerrickAshimwe:
Booing Courtois is what it is but I think it has ran its course
Our fans will never forgive him for how he left disgracefully
But in hindsight, he gave us 3 world class years, we won the league twice
His kids were in Spain.. he wanted to be near them
Cant blame any man for that

@D_Dreeeeee: Courtois takin the piss 😭 infront of the chelsea fans is elite shithousery

ON SILVA:

@hambaa82: Finally, someone speaks the truth.

@Jacob_Mulraney: Well said Thiago

@cuche43: Remember when Tuchel said something similar about signing players because of the many injuries we had at the time? This same fanbase called him names. Now look at them 😂

@Pagmenzies: It’s pretty clear the players hate being there and Boehly has no idea what he’s doing. Maybe next year in the Championship he can sort it out

@CFCstory: Wow, “INDECISION”. That’s the word. You have bad players that you need to sell, you didn’t sell them. Then poor managers were using poor players instead of good players. We should sack bad managers and employ a good one. We can sign players but we should have sold bad players.

@plsmrt5: At least he has some balls and a perspective on reality!

@TheMahareJnr: @todd_boehly and team have no idea how to run a football club so they try to copy anything that looks fancy ; hence their reference to Arsenal’s project without looking at context. They are groping in the dark and don’t want anyone to switch on the lights…

@anishc_25:
Damn
Sounds bad you know
Silva said too much maybe in public
But again the players might not be liking this too, them coming in the dressing room everytime especially when everything is going wrong.
The owners have the final say tho, need to trim the squad and go again. #CFC

@TrueBlue_Cosmo: Quite insane how massive the roster has gotten. At this point, we need to create a department of sales just to focus on reducing the amount of players and making sure we send the right documents through.

@LouiseCFC3: Strong words from Thiago and I agree completely.

@always_anjali: Thiago Silva saying what we all think, fix up Boehly
