Controversial ex-Sunderland chief becomes Charlton’s fourth owners in less than four years

Controversial ex-Sunderland chief Charlie Methven becomes Charlton’s fourth owners in less than four years, confirmed on Monday.

Danish-American businessman Thomas Sandgaard was the sole director and owner of the Addicks. The deal is subject to approval by the EFL.

Edward Warrick and Methven are the directors of SE7 Partners. Methven left his position as director at Sunderland, in December 2019.

Sandgaard took over Charlton in September 2021, but fans lost their patience with him and his running of the club.

Belgian Roland Duchatelet also wasn’t popular with fans and sold the club in January 2020 to East Street Investments, with the club was relegated that May from the Championship.

In July 2020, after a fallout between ESI directors Tahnoon Nimr and Matt Southall a businessman named Paul Elliott took control of the club and ran it for three months before Sandgaard took control.

Charlton haven’t been able to met the high expectations which were set by Sandgaard.

In just over two years, they have had five permanent managers and in three seasons with Sandgaard as owner, they finished 7th, 13th and 10th.

In October, the parent company reported a loss before tax of £6.8m for 10 months to June 2021.

Fans hope Methven and Warrick can turn the club around and get them back in the second tier.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Charlton Athletic can confirm that a deal has been agreed for SE7 Partners to purchase the football club.

A share purchase agreement (SPA) has been signed by the club’s current owner Thomas Sandgaard and SE7 Partners. The club and SE7 Partners will work with the EFL to meet its requirements before approval for the takeover is granted.

The club’s CEO Peter Storrie said: “A deal has been agreed and a share purchase agreement has been signed by Thomas Sandgaard and SE7 Partners. We’ll now work with SE7 Partners and the EFL to meet the league requirements, which is a process that can take some time.

“In the meantime, the day-to-day running of the club will not be impacted. Our preparation and recruitment for the 2023/24 season is well under way. We have our targets for our men’s team and our women’s team. Led by Dean Holden and Karen Hills, those plans continue to progress and will not be halted while we await the approval. The aim is to put the club in the best position to achieve our targets for next season – a top-six finish for the men’s team and further progression for the women’s team.”

The club and SE7 Partners group will communicate with supporters as soon as the takeover is complete.

This is what fans are saying as the controversial ex-Sunderland chief becomes Charlton’s fourth owners in less than four years…

@FootyShirtLad: I see the EFL fit and proper tests are still as good as ever then 😬 good luck with that salmon trousered toff at the helm, can’t believe they’ve allowed him anywhere near another football club.

@haddock_addick: Congratulations on your purchase of some players and the catering team

@notch_32: I am so sorry Charlton fans. This won’t end well.

@eb92safc: He will asset strip the club and take money out of the club. Charlton fans this is not good news.

@ChrisEpollard: Worrying to see Methven involved after what he was involved in with Sunderland, there they invested zero funds and took out a ton of cash, I hope that won’t be repeated here

@Addxegol: Desperately want to believe it’s going to be smooth sailing from here on out, but you can almost guarantee there will be drama from the get go, as there always is with our club. Won’t be surprised if getting EFL approval is a saga in itself.

@EthanSmith1717: Good luck charlton fans! If salmon pants treats you lot the way he did us your Club will be an even bigger mess in no time.

@andyoots: Speaking as Sunderland fan…Governed by self interest and will use club to leverage own ends. Blames everyone but self if things start going wrong. Arrogant, bullying patronising, untrustworthy. Should be in front bench at Westminster really.

@Gardy010: I’m not getting carried away with this new lot. I just hope it turns out for the best and we’re run like a normal club again.

@Joe_Cafc: 8th time lucky we hope

@paddywalshsafc: good luck, you’re going to need it with that chancer

@GuyJDavies: Well, Methven consortium it is then… from his history at Sunderland it seems likely we’ll be in a whole lot worse position than we are with Sandgaard. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Fingers crossed I guess 🤞 #cafc #safc

@DeanoCummings85: deepest sympathies at this horrendous time

@Safc1879_: Good club Charlton. Keep your eyes peeled and be wary of these people. Expect all your academy youths to be sold for peanuts

@jakesafcftm: Hahahahhahahah hold that Patrick Bauer

@pottsy_01: Fit and proper test doing it’s job again 🙄

@crxig01: Get rid of him ASAP from a Sunderland fan. Good luck

@WestLondonAddi1:
Great news.
Good riddance to the odious Sandgaard family 👋
Message to the new owners – under promise, over deliver.
The fanbase is watching you 👀

@chrisgaudie: These people should not be allowed through the doors @CAFCofficial be warned. Charlton are a great club and I wish you all the best, you are going to need it #safc 🔴⚪️🔴⚪️

@MiserableMackem: I’m not just saying this to be anything other than realistic – this man will strip you down, chew you up then spit you out. This is genuinely horrendous news for Charlton. Beyond levels you could imagine.

@Boshanko: Nothing but a chancer. Reserve a place in your car park for his wheelbarrow. I hope for your clubs sake, you don’t have a crop if promising academy players. If you do, say goodbye to them, he’ll have them sold for peanuts to pay utility bills.

@ChristopherT198: RIP so sorry 😢

@BradKemsley: More clowns 🤡 #banterFC

@joshmontage656: Hope you don’t have any young and promising academy players that are worth anything

@fozzy_gamer: Ouch unlucky lads Charlie boy should be nowhere near a football club he and Donald were shocking here #safc
