CONFIRMED: Gareth Southgate picks replacement for Alexander-Arnold ahead of Euro 2020

Gareth Southgate picks a replacement for Alexander-Arnold for Euro 2020, it has been confirmed by reports early on Monday morning.

Brighton centre back Ben White has been selected to make Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad for the Euros.

The 23-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Sunday’s final warm-up match against Romania, impressing the manager after helping the team keep a clean sheet.

He has done enough to earn himself a place in the squad, with the Athletic first reporting that he has beaten the likes of Jesse Lingard and James Ward-Prowse to the final spot.

White will be celebrating his inclusion in the final squad having only made his senior England debut earlier in the week.

He showed his versatility by coming on as a holding midfielder against Austria, also clearing the ball off the line to save his side late on, before playing the full 90 at centre back against Romania on Sunday night.

Ollie Watkins and Ben Godfrey are among the other players to miss out on the final 26-man squad having made the initial 33 selected by Southgate.

There are now just six days to go until the Three Lions’ first match of the tournament, when they take on Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.

BRIGHTON STATEMENT:

The 23-year-old, who was named Albion’s Player of the Year on Sunday, is now in the 26-man squad preparing for Sunday’s opener against Croatia at England’s training base at St George’s Park. He has been given squad no. 22.

The FA confirmed this morning that White will replace Alexander-Arnold, who has a thigh injury, after making an impressive full debut in England’s 1-0 win over Romania in their final game before the tournament on Sunday.

White was named by head coach Gareth Southgate in a 33-man preliminary squad last month. That was whittled down to 26 last week with White among the players placed on standby for the Euros.

He became England’s 1261st full international last Wednesday when he came on as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 win over Austria. Southgate deployed White as a defensive midfielder in that game, but he played in central defence against Romania.

He becomes the first Albion player to feature in an England squad for a major tournament since Steve Foster during the 1982 World Cup.

ENGLAND STATEMENT:

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Ben White has been added to England’s 26-man squad for UEFA EURO 2020.

The 23-year-old replaces Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was ruled out of the tournament last week through injury.

Having made his England debut against Austria in Middlesbrough last Wednesday, White further impressed on his first start for the Three Lions as he played the duration of Sunday’s win against Romania back at the Riverside Stadium.

It is just reward for the Dorset-born defender, who capped his first full campaign in the Premier League by being named Brighton’s men’s player of the season over the weekend.

Gareth Southgate’s squad will continue their tournament preparation at St. George’s Park this week ahead of the Group D opener against Croatia at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Fans reacted as Gareth Southgate picks the replacement for Alexander-Arnold ahead of Euro 2020…

@NCFCJake: Hmm idk about this. JWP would of been a better option

@smit112: Yeah i agree. Henderson not fit either which leaves is majorly short in midfield.

@bancroft_mathew: Some of the squad decisions have been dreadful. Happy for the lad but we are so defense heavy. Lingard brightened the game up when he came on and prowse was fantastic all game. Neither of them are going

@rePETEr_Head: JWP not going is Southgate’s Hoddle not taking Le Tissier moment.

@El_Morg: Fair play to Ben White, but how is it not James Ward-Prowse going?

@nashernal: Congratulations @ben6white. For those saying it should have been JWP, personally I’d take White over Tyrone Mings and I’d take JWP over a semi fit Henderson, but this is the right call for me if he’s only going to take one.

@JamesOwl2006: No, so wrong. Why JWP has not been picked is beyond belief

@gfcarsenal: Fairplay he did really well in the 2 friendlies and all season but I can’t help feel like we should have another midfielder

@CraigySmiffy: Lingard must be truly hated

@OleTrain: How are English fans still okay with Southgate as their manager? HOW?

@CoryyyWhitworth: So we’ve left the best dead ball specialist in the country at home. Again.

@maci_que: James Ward-Prowse… After his performance yesterday I thought the clueless coach would pick him… his deliveries would are just top class and England has Kane and DCL who are deadly in the air

@HarryUTV: Should have been JWP. Yet another decision Southgate has bottled

@ReissNFFC: Fair enough but if he is waiting on Maguire & Henderson especially to be fit, shouldn’t have took them. Need players ready for the here & now. Never worked in the past when been waiting around on players to become fit mid tournament.

@Sleepyscuz: Joke decision. JWP all day long

Fans continued to react as Gareth Southgate picks a replacement for Alexander-Arnold ahead of Euro 2020…

@joethomlinson: If Ben White is getting the nod over JWP then Harry Maguire’s injury must be worse than first feared… which is an absolute catastrophe 😭😭😭😭

@georgeprokopa: Think this is very sensible, really feel for JWP for missing out entirely. The CB situation needed resolving more so that midfield, however White’s versatility is very useful. Been very impressed by him in the last couple games!

@isoncfc: Gareth Southgate hasn’t got a fucking clue has he?

@TalkCPFC: How on Earth is it not JWP? I don’t mind White tbh but Ward-Prowse offers far, far more

@xthfcjamie: This is utterly ridiculous, the fact JWP isn’t going is shameful

@EnglandsBestCB: JWP must feel gutted, but if Maguires going to be injured for the group stage & the likes of Henderson are still injured he can play DM & CB & RB if needed, so it makes sense & he was amazing in both friendly games, so you can’t say he doesn’t deserve it! ONE OF OUR OWN!

@mangel14s: Probably the right decision as it’s really cover for Maguire, given Mings was terrible yesterday. @Prowsey16 should have been on plane in place of Henderson, and proven better than Phillips. Just unfashionable. Best player on park yesterday, with Grealish. #englandsquad

@simonlines: Jordan Henderson looked like he’d been picked out the crowd after winning a competition during his 45 minutes of action last night. Meanwhile, Harry Maguire has only just started running. Both of these players going to the Euro’s. Mind boggles.

@jonno1976: Drop Maguire and replace with White, drop Henderson and replace with Ward Prowse and add Lingard to replace TAA. Lingard who wasn’t playing went out on loan and had a fantastic end to the season and is rewarded by being omitted for players who are injured. Shocking management!

@cjlsmith87: Not that surprised considering how horrendously bad Mings was in both warm up matches. But do think JWP should have been in squad just for his dead ball deliveries, considering England will likely score 70+% of goals from corners & free kicks.

@gosdave1: Suggests to me that Maguire isn’t going to make it – otherwise ward prowse was the obvious choice

@LeeCartlidge: Definitely the right decision. Our defence is weak, with Maguire out injured and mings a liability. Ben white looked so calm confident. Will be a regular on the team sheet as the years go on
