Colchester go viral after conceding FREAK own goal against Grimsby

Colchester United go viral after conceding a freak own goal during their 3-2 victory against Grimsby Town on Tuesday night.

The U’s picked up a much needed win in their first game since getting rid of boss Ben Garner on Saturday following four successive defeats which had left them second bottom in League Two.

It was a terrible start for the away side, who after just seven minutes saw goalkeeper Owen Goodman struggle to deal with an unhelpful backpass from a teammate, with a heavy pass leaving to Goodman trying to deal with it, but instead headed it backwards.

Goodman could be seen trying to clear the ball with his left foot, only for the keeper to miss it and went into the net.

Luckily for him, his teammates went on to win the game, Joe Taylor got the scoreline back on level terms just three minutes later, then Zach Mitchell put Colchester 2-1 up in the first half.

Donovan Wilson made it 2-2 before England U20s player Goodman – who is on loan from Crystal Palace – produced two stunning saves with Arthur Read netted a 64th-minute winner for Colchester.

It sees Etherington’s side move out of the drop zone, going above Forest Green Rovers and Tranmere Rovers into to 21st, and are now just one point behind 20th place Grimsby.

Colchester’s Matty Etherington said, as per Gazette News: “You can go through all of the tactical stuff and yes, it is important but heart and desire, especially in the position that we’re in right now, is the most important thing.

“I think they showed that in abundance with blocks and tackles.

“The effort that they put into that performance was nothing short of brilliant.

“Overall, it was a really morale-boosting performance and the players should hopefully take loads from that.”

Etherington said on the own goal: “It’s taken a deflection and I could see the spin on the ball.

“For me, it’s got nothing to do with Owen; it’s bounced up, it’s spun, he’s taken a touch with his head.

“There’s not a lot he can do about that and I think it would be really harsh to blame him.

“There was an awful lot of spin on that ball and it was just unfortunate.

“He then makes a brilliant save at 1-0 and tips it onto the post and then we got a foothold in the game.

“I thought we were really good and played some really good stuff but that save from Owen at 1-0 was really important.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Colchester go viral after conceding that FREAK own goal against Grimsby…

@ethanncm: one of the weirdest own goals i’ve seen in a while 🤣

@_aidanclark19: what have i just witnessed?

@Hilly3012: The Beautiful Game.

@cj11tt: Not exaggerating this is one of the funniest goals I’ve seen in my life. Their keeper has literally headed it backwards into his own net instead of just putting his hands up and catching the ball. Incredible scenes

@Andyjack83: Keeper had a mare there… why didn’t he just catch it? not a pass back anyway…

@odonoghuejames: He forgot he could use his hands 🤣🤣

@FulhamTransfer: Calamitous 🤣

@paulyp14: Genuinely one of the worst goals I’ve seen scored in professional football. Maher obviously thought so too and thought it only fair to let them equalise straight after. UTM 🎣

@CWinterford: That is the worst goal I’ve ever seen conceded by a professional football club

@LJ1862: Wtf is that

@KyleTalbot7: Best og ever seen 😂

@Mrjayowhy: Do people not know a keeper can’t use their hands in control a back pass 🥴 BUT if the ball goes over my head from the initial bounce.. I’m punching that thing clear and taken a early shower ☹️

@AlLUFC20: Nice bit of match fixing here

@OwnGoalZone: A brilliant own goal from the Grimsby v Colchester game yesterday. #OGOTY contender

@mattydevlin: Has he got a bet on there? Surely could’ve got the second attempt with his mitts

@Beavilicious: I love the line “it bounces up off his head”

@AlanListens: This is what VAR wants to take from us

@JamieHutchWafc: To be a fair… It’s a fucking cracking finish. 😂

@Harry_griffin92: Ladies and gentlemen. League 2 😍

@regularguy: No complaining about any weird goalie things in #FM24 now. That’s the rules.

@NicWirtz: Answering the question, “But can he do it on an unseasonably warm, climate change affected night in Grimsby?” Yes he can!
