Clubs go viral poking fun at Southampton’s spygate scandal with ‘spy’ themed tweets

Clubs go viral poking fun at Southampton’s spygate scandal with ‘spy’ themed tweets on social media in the last week.

Well, what a month May has been, the regular season came to an end, and just as the Championship playoffs got underway, news broke of Middlesbrough reporting that Southampton had been caught spying on their training session ahead of the playoff first leg fixture between the two clubs.

Middlesbrough, who ended up being beaten in extra time by Southampton in the second leg, have been reinstated and will play Hull City in the final for a place in the Premier League. Southampton were expelled after admitting they spied on three clubs during the Championship season.

The EFL charged Saints with watching Oxford United and Ipswich Town’s training sessions, in addition to filming Middlesbrough. Southampton lost 2-1 to Oxford, drew 2-2 against Ipswich, and played out a goalless draw with Middlesbrough in the playoff first leg.

The independent disciplinary commission also handed Southampton a four-point deduction in the Championship for the 2026/27 season.

Southampton appealed the decision, only for the EFL to stick with the decision. Players have started to speak out, Taylor Harwood-Bellis apologised for taunting Middlesbrough, and the Football Association have now launched an investigation into Southampton’s conduct.

Southampton’s hierarchy meanwhile are thought to be delaying a decision on Tonda Eckert’s future — but sources close to the club believe he is to leave. Alex Crook saying he faces being sacked, an FA ban, with the sporting director also under scrutiny, the owner ‘furious’, and fearful that sponsors will pull out while angry players consider taking legal action.

As the weeks played out, clubs took to social media, Australian football team Central Coast Mariners highlighted that a snake wasn’t a spy from Southampton.
