Chesterfield could be set to bring in former Ipswich, Portsmouth and Wigan boss Paul Cook if reports are anything to go by on Wednesday.
Liam Norcliffe of the Derbyshire Times has revealed some truly quite stunning news in that if could be on the cards should James Rowe not return from his suspension.
The 54-year-old, who achieved great success at the Spireites in his previous spell at the National League club between 2012 and 2015, is believed to be very interested in coming back after leaving almost seven years ago, the article suggests.
Any appointment right now is tough to speculate considering the situation the club find themselves in after suspending James Rowe.
Derbyshire Times however say there is a growing sense that it is more than just a possibility that Cook could make a return.
If it comes off, it would be a huge boost of optimism for the Spireites with the experience he boasts from his time in the EFL.
If Cook does come in, it’s claimed he is likely to bring along former Chesterfield player Gary Roberts, who was his first-team coach at his last job at the Tractorboys.
In his previous spell at the Spireites, Cook guided the side to a League Two title as well as the League One playoffs and a JPT final before departing for Portsmouth.
His last job at Ipswich Town ended in December after he was given the boot following nine months in charge.
The situation with Rowe, who was suspended last week over misconduct allegations, is still very quiet, with police unwilling to reveal if there are investigating the matter.

Twitter users gave their reaction with reports saying Chesterfield could be set to bring in former the Ipswich, Portsmouth and Wigan boss back…
@Spireite7547: James Rowe is our manager. He has an average of higher than two points per game. He has assembled these players to give us a reasonable chance of getting promotion. Feels a bit soon and a tad disrespectful to be announcing possible replacements.
@lukeCFC25: Liam is giving the fans an ounce of news about the club, the club have told us nothing other than the statement. If James Rowe isn’t going to continue as our manager, the club rightly need to look for a replacement even temporarily. All Liam is doing is reporting this
@mcgurk999: Please let’s not write off JR just yet. We owe him so much.
@StevoJW: Would love Cooky back. Ask him if he can bring my sponsored car back please 😂
@MichaelWilcox82: Really hope this comes off. What a statement that would be 😍
@robcowlishaw: If Cook does return he’d probably be better off with Web as his assistant rather than Gary Roberts.
@SpireTweet: The chat over a possible return of Cook is growing. One way or another, the sooner we have some clarity over who is going to be in charge going into a big few months, the better.
@ShadyAsh45: Does it look like Rowe has gone then? This would be about the only saving grace but couldn’t see him dropping down to that level tbh
@andrewpetergil1: We’re going up
@clarkecfc97: Beers immediately
@blakedcfc: Oh my god
@TomPike21: Tears in my eyes
@cfcjb_: liams tweeted it means its happening
@stellainchessy: If this does happen, I’m giving full credit to @SpireLegends for the cheeky Whatsapp
@WallySpire: Been hinting at this for days he’s coming back #Spireites
@Richard06611694: Dream team
