Chesterfield beat Boreham Wood to seal promotion back to the EFL after 6 year absence

Chesterfield beat Boreham Wood to be crowned National League champions and seal promotion back to the EFL after a 6 year absence.

The Spireites went into this game needing to avoid defeat at home to Boreham Wood, after Oldham and Halifax put the champagne on ice.

But a 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon with skipper Jamie Grimes netting twice and Liam Mandeville scoring either side of his goals sees them lift the National League trophy.

Paul Cook’s side return to League Two, having dropped out of it in 2018, which at the time meant that would be playing in non league for the first time since re-joining the Football League in 1921.

Then manager Jack Lester had won just nine of his 37 games in charge, but left, while his backroom staff also departed the club.

In came Ian Evatt for the final three games of the season, assisted by academy coach Miguel Llera, as caretaker, winning 1 and losing the other two, before he then got appointed by Barrow in 2018, and stayed with them until 2020, when he left for Bolton.

The managers that Chesterfield had since 2018, were the likes of Martin Allen, John Sheridan, John Pemberton, John Dungworth, James Rowe and then current boss Paul Cook, who transformed the club and guided them back to the EFL.

Nearly 10,000 fans were inside the stadium, and watched as Chesterfield went ahead near the half hour mark, a Liam Mandeville corner landed straight on the head of Jamie Grimes on the penalty spot, putting the ball into the back of the net. Nothing the keeper could do about that.

Then within the first minute of the second half, Dobra crossed for Mandeville who slotted the ball home, with the party starting in the stands.

On 68 minutes, Dobra did fantastically down the by-line, then slipped the ball through to Jamie Grimes to making it 3-0, and also get Chesterfield’s 100th league goal of the season.
