Cheltenham’s Luke Young wows fans as he scores stunning free kick against Gillingham

Cheltenham’s Luke Young wows fans as he scores a stunning free kick against Gillingham, with the game playing out to a 2-2 draw.

The hosts had been searching for a third win in succession, and soon opened the scoring through Jayden Clarke in the 24th minute, however a long range free-kick from Luke Young levelled the scoreline at the break.

The Robins went ahead thanks to George Miller’s sixth goal of the season on the hour mark only, but George Lapslie then made it 2-2 eight minutes later.

The result means, going into Saturday, Cheltenham sit 13th in the League Two table with 27 points from 21 games played, while Gillingham are 9th with 30 points from 20 games played.

GILLINGHAM (4-2-3-1): Morris; Hutton (Ogie 86), Ehmer ©, Masterson, Clark; McKenzie, Coleman (Coleman 86); Clarke, Nolan (Dack 70), Rowe (Lapslie 62); Nevitt. Subs not used: Turner (Gk), J.Williams, E.Williams

CHELTENHAM TOWN (4-2-3-1): Day; Jude-Boyd (Dulson 78), Stubbs, Bakare, Bradbury; Young ©, Kinsella; Thomas, Colwill (Payne 57), Archer; Miller (Taylor 78). Subs not used: Evans (Gk), Laing, Bowman, Pett

Cheltenham boss Michael Flynn said: “I was disappointed with the goals we gave away but Gillingham started the better team, first 15 or 20 minutes.

“We didn’t get going but what I will say is, I have three or four of them ill. Joel Colwill was one of them and that’s why he came off early.

“The boys have put in an unbelievable shift and I thought they were brilliant.

“The work-rate, the goals and in the second half, we were really dangerous on the counter and we stood up to the aerial bombardment well against a strong, strong team.”

Gillingham’s Mark Bonner: “It was a really good, entertaining game and we gave it a really good go,” he said.

“We had a lot of chances in the game and we were the more likely to win it.

“Overall, we are frustrated with what we conceded and the fact we haven’t taken three points because it’s a bit of an opportunity missed.

“I hated how we started the second half, we lacked intensity and their second goal was absolute toilet.

“But I am really pleased we have kept a little run going, which is key. There were times when we looked really good, which is promising going into a busy period.”
