Cheltenham and Forest Green fans taunt each other with baton-wielding police on scene

Cheltenham and Forest Green fans took to taunt each other with baton-wielding police on scene in the town centre prior to Saturday’s fixture.

It has been dubbed as the “El Glosico” for a while, but the rivalry between Cheltenham Town and Forest Green is one both fans really feel passionately about.

Alfie May’s double helped Cheltenham to a 3-1 victory over already relegated opponents Forest Green.

The result mens that the Robins’ League One survival was confirmed, making it one defeat in their last 10 games, with all the damage done in the first half.

May opened the scoring on the 14th minute after Aidan Keena’s pass, finishing with a low shot in off the left post.

Keena got his side’s second with another finish into the bottom left corner after seizing on a misplaced pass on the half hour mark.

Cheltenham were too much to handle with May getting on the end of Will Ferry’s cross from the left to steer the ball inside the far post with keeper Ross Doohan taken out of the game in the 38th minute.

It was the in-form striker’s 9th goal in the last 10 games and his 20th of the campaign in all competitions.

Doohan fell on a shot from Keena at the end of a half dominated by the hosts, before Rovers pulled one back three minutes into the second half with Corey O’Keeffe’s corner from the right not being cleared, leading to Dom Bernard’s shot being touched in by Jordon Garrick.
Before the match, police officers used batons to control fans after clashes between rival football clubs in the town centre. Cheltenham and Forest Green fans hurled smoke grenades, and police officers used batons in order to control the fans.

Town Head coach Wade Elliott said post-match: “You’ve seen the quality of the league and the stature of some teams, and we have to get it right to even be competitive, let alone to do what we have done.

“We didn’t think after staying up last season that we have a god given right to stay in the league, and it’s a big achievement.”

Alfie May added: “At the start of the season, people probably thought we were favourites to go down. We just stayed quiet and knew what we had to do,” said May.

“It’s a tough league this year. Maybe now people might stop saying, ‘little old Cheltenham.’ We are a League One team…we’ll see you next year.”

Forest Green Rovers boss Duncan Ferguson said: “We never turned up. I don’t know what was wrong, we lost duels, weren’t quite aggressive enough and made a few mistakes.

“When you’re in a derby game you’ve got to be ready, and we weren’t. I was disappointed with the first 35 minutes.

“At half time you’re looking at fives and sixes so to be fair to the players, they showed a lot of character in the second half to turn that around.

“We got a goal in the second half and they didn’t so that’s something. Can we get any points for that?

“Jordon’s improved his ball retention lately, we’ve been getting onto him about it as we have with other players. Some players were down at 50% ball retention, and now they’re at 80%, that’s been a massive swing.

“They are motivated, they haven’t downed tools, they’re trying their best but unfortunately it wasn’t good enough.

“They’re playing for their futures as well, playing to impress their parent clubs, players being out of contract.”
