Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen filmed celebrating after rejecting Burnley despite Sky Sports speculation

Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen has been filmed celebrating after rejecting Burnley despite the Sky Sports speculation saying he could move.

The left-back has delighted his club’s fans by pledging his allegiance to the Blues after footage of the 21-year-old saw him pleased at rejecting a move to Burnley emerged online.

On Deadline Day, he turned down the chance to head back to Burnley on a season-long loan which also included a £31.5million obligation to buy.

Chelsea had reportedly accepted Burnley’s offer but the player instead decided to remain where he was and fight for a place.

A video was uploaded to social media, showing Maatsen reacting to Burnley’s bid, take a look below…

He could be seen sat back watching Deadlien Day unfold on Sky Sports, but news broke about Burnley’s interest, to which Maatsen replied in a caption on the clip: “I’m still here, up the Blues!”

Despite, the deal being agreed between the teams is a loan with an obligation to turn it into a transfer, for a total value, including add-ons, of £31.5million, and a sell-on clause, which would have made Maatsen their biggest ever signing, doubling their current record, the player was still unimpressed and reluctant to leave.

He impressed out on loaned at Burnley last season, being named in the Championship Team of the Season, scoring four goals and registered six assists in 42 games, but Ben Chilwell is a tough one to replace at Chelsea, with Maatsen also trialled in a more central attacking role back at Chelsea in pre-season.

He was given the chance to prove himself in pre-season under Mauricio Pochettino and did well during the Blues’ summer tour of the USA, netting twice in a 5-0 win over Wrexham.

So far for the 2023/24 season, Maatsen has made three competitive appearances for Chelsea this season, earning his first Premier League minutes against Liverpool and starting against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Journalist Matt Law said on reports he could move to Burnley that Maatsen opted to stay at Chelsea rather than return to Lancashire.

Maatsen’s temporary move to the Clarets last year had been his third loan spell away from Chelsea, having previously spent time with Coventry City and Charlton Athletic.

For Chelsea, he has made four appearances for the Blues since joining from PSV Eindhoven in 2018 and was called up to the Netherlands squad for September’s Euro 2024 qualifiers with Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

@bennufc_18: Fairs he might be propa chels

@CFCdxn_: He’s proper Chels, we need that

@EnzoFlair: Burnley were tryna negotiate with him and bros just sat there chilling watching tv lmao 😭😭😭

@LiamCov95: Ian Maatsen is still a shithouse I see #PUSB

@__Sutty: Fingers crossed he gets no game time at ‘the blues’ 🖕🖕🖕

@awbuswell: Had a great loan spell at Coventry. Was disrespectful afterwards. Had a great loan spell at Burnley. Was disrespectful afterwards. Sensing a pattern and a heavily inflated ego here 🤔

@stilllrunning: i need to see the sadness in his eyes when he watches cucurella get subbed on ahead of him for the 4th game in a row

@rushy_sport: Pretty ridiculous from Maatsen this. We gave him the platform to establish himself in Chelsea’s squad this season. Had his game not been developed by Kompany he would be playing in the Championship again this season. It’s a lack of respect thats just undeserved #twitterclarets

@italianclarets: Thoughts? Honestly didn’t expect that from Ian. Thought he had slightly more respect for us #twitterclarets

@TurfMoorLoyal: Don’t personally think there’s any disrespect here. He’s probably just laughing at Sky getting it so ridiculously wrong from his point of view. Should still get a good reception when/if he plays against us…

@LeeBurgessPSR: It’s a dig at the press not Burnley. Nothing to get upset about. Move on.

@TheHuddleYT: I honestly believe we dodged a £30m bullet there. I don’t know who lost their nerve on that deal but someone did. The second CFC said thirty, they should have laughed and put the phone down.

@tom_p_wallace: Buzzing to stay at a club that agreed to sell him. Odd!

@BURNLEYFCUTC: There could be so many factors as to why he decided not to come. It’s not our God given right that all players must come to us if given the option. People saying its ‘disrespectful’ from him is absolutely bonkers

@BeeReignBeau: Not a bad player but not a 30M player. Shown what we mean to him now time to move on

@KompanysC: If you believe what you read, Chelsea were literally trying to persuade him to go. Be interesting to see if he signs another contract now or plans to run it down. If he’s annoyed Chelsea he mightn’t see much game time now.

@claretpipe: Much as I like Maatsen, he wasn’t the full package particularly defensively. He is not a 30mil plus player. Hope he gets game time at Chelsea, I don’t see too much for him though.

@TurfCastPodcast: Some people saying there’s not much in this but I find it disrespectful to a club that gave him a platform to grow as a footballer @maatsen_ian

@BFC84Ash: Give your head a wobble if you’re having a meltdown over this. He’s taking the piss out of sky not Burnley Fair play to the lad for sticking his ground he knows there’ll be opportunities in that young Chelsea team this season and Boehly only wanted rid for FFP reasons

@littlewood88: The same way he did when he joined you lot and threw shade at Cov, but we were just called salty 🤷🏼
