Chelsea come back from 2-0 down to beat Leeds 6-3 with the Blues scoring SIX second half goals to progress through in the Carabao Cup.

Jaka Bijol (23′) and Brenden Aaronson (48′) were on target to have Leeds 2-0 up. But then came the Chelsea goals, Cole Palmer (53′ p, 55′), Pedro Neto (60′ and Danny Welbeck (65′).

Dominic Calvert-Lewin got Leeds a third on 75 minutes, but Chelsea wrapped up the win, Valentín Barco (80′) and Danny Welbeck (90+4′) finding the net.

Leeds head coach Daniel Farke on Sky Sports:

“We played with confidence, there was not even a chance for them, then the referee decided to give a penalty.

“Nobody was asking for it, all of a sudden their players came into the game. The momentum was on their side. Situations can change the whole momentum of the game.”

He said, as per the club website: “Yes, a bit of a crazy game. A bit unlike us to concede so many goals.

“This is what happens when you rotate so much and it’s a bit of a risk like this, but I think overall, we were in full control after 60 minutes, scored the 2-0, and had everything under control. And then, Chelsea scored without having a chance.

“This small detail, of course, changed the momentum because we were in full control, so the stadium was quiet.

“A few players needed to get the chance today, and a few players need also a bit of rest, and for that we took the risk to be not flawless today.

“Also, when I judge a game in total, we had slightly more possession than Chelsea, exactly the same amount of expected goals, even more shots, anyhow. I think performance-wise we could take many, many positives from it.

“The concentration, focus on the small details, this is something where we have to be a bit self-critical, but to be honest, this game on Monday has more or less nothing to do with the game today.

“So for that, we are disappointed today because we wanted to win it and without this penalty given, was more than possible, but we will put this also pretty quick to bed and then concentrate on the bigger things.”

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said, as per Sky Sports:

“There was so many changes. There was a risk. Things weren’t going the way we planned, so we had to change. I take responsibility with the first half. The crowd were great, with the atmosphere [pushing the players on].

“I like that [the substitutes] were ready before the game. They knew they weren’t starting and they were ready to make an impact.

“When you put together a team that hardly plays together, it is difficult to play at this level when [Leeds] are intense.”

He told the club’s media: ‘It was thrilling and there were different emotions during the game,’ reflected Alonso. ‘Things were not going the way we wanted in the first half, and I made those decisions, so I take responsibility and take the blame, not the players.

‘In the second half, we showed a great reaction after conceding the second goal. We kept going, and it was very important to believe and get the crowd excited. They helped us a lot.’

On making four subs at half-time, Alonso added: ‘[We asked that] they try to have a good impact in energy, in aggressiveness, in tempo, in duels, because we were struggling in that moment against a very intense Leeds. We did very well. I take context for the first half and I will assess my own decisions.

‘Even in the first half, I’m not going to blame the attitude. There were many new things together and they were not working – that is my responsibility. Afterward, once you score, you start believing, looking better and making better decisions.

‘So it’s about the mind of the players, the feeling and it was much better in the second half.’
