Chelsea and Real Betis fans clash with objects thrown and police using tear gas

Chelsea and Real Betis fans clash with objects thrown and police using tear gas ahead of the UEFA Conference League Final.

The violent scenes unfolded in the Wroclaw Market Square, where supporters threw objects like glasses, chairs, and tables.

Polish police intervened, using tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the crowds and forming a human wall to separate the rival groups.

Videos circulating online captured the chaos, showing riot police detaining individuals as tensions escalated. The clashes raised security concerns for the final, with local authorities working to restore order.

In one video, a group of men threw chairs and glasses at others under a canopy marked with a “London only” flag, suggesting a Chelsea fan area.

Riot police used tear gas to intervene. Another clip showed rival groups hurling objects from pubs, with less-equipped police struggling to manage the chaos.

Local reports noted fans gathered at the Guinness bar and Kombinat pub. Later, heavily equipped police restored order, but the square remained crowded with supporters after dark.

Authorities are using CCTV to identify key instigators. Over 70,000 fans were expected in Wroclaw for the match.

In a statement from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wroclaw, they claim there was ‘no further escalation of the conflict or negative behaviour’ after officers reported to the scene.

“The fans scattered in different directions and currently the police officers of the criminal division are conducting activities aimed at identifying them,” the statement read.

“The number of preventive and operational police forces and their saturation is so large in places where residents and sports fans gather or move around that everyone can feel safe.

The statement added: “Firefighters from the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Wroclaw and rescuers are also ready to respond immediately, especially in the area of the stadium and all fan zones.’

UEFA officials are currently monitoring the situation closely ahead of kick-off. The governing body has previously taken action against clubs whose supporters have been involved in violent incidents.

Local police say that more information about the clashes would be released as their investigation continues.

It remains unclear how many arrests have been made or how many supporters sustained injuries during the confrontation.
