Chelmsford City sign ex-Premier League and EFL defender

Chelmsford City sign ex-Premier League and EFL defender Elliott Ward having most recently been with League Two club Cambridge United.

He made his debut for the Clarets in last night’s impressive 3-1 National League South win over Tonbridge Angels, which fellow top flight player Leroy Lita get on the scoresheet.

35 year old Elliott Ward is an experienced central defender, starting his career with West Ham United in 2001, featuring in both the Championship and Premier League between 2003 and 2006, making over 15 appearances for the first-team.

After numerous loan spells during his time with the Hammers, which included spells with Peterborough United, Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle, Elliott then headed for Coventry City where he also played alongside current interim manager, Robbie Simpson, between 2006-10.

After departing Coventry, he signed for Norwich City on a free transfer, helping the Canaries to promotion to the Premier League during the 2010/11 season. However it was injuries that prevented his involvement the following year and had two loan spells with Nottingham Forest in 2012 and 2013.

He joined Bournemouth on an initial one-year deal after their promotion to the Championship in 2013 and made two league appearances in the Cherries’ 2014/15 season where they won promotion to the Premier League in 2015, becoming Ward’s third club he was involved with winning promotion to the top tier of English football.

After cancelling his contract with Bournemouth by mutual consent in 2016, Ward has gone on to play for Blackburn Rovers, Notts County and Cambridge United.
