Cheeky digs from Danny Welbeck and Sunderland fan as they ‘mug off’ Newcastle

There were cheeky digs from Danny Welbeck and a Sunderland fan as they ‘mug off’ Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

Danny Welbeck showed Newcastle United what Adam Pearson labelled ‘a lack of respect’ with the Sunderland celebration as his two goals won it for Brighton.

As the Magpies languish in 12th, with 9 points from 8 games, north east rivals Sunderland are in the European spots after beating Wolves 2-0 to go 7th with 14 points from 8 games.. Two fans have it out on the radio. Hilarity ensues.

On talkSPORT, Newcastle fan Dylan called into Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy’s post-game show to downplay Sunderland’s strong start to the season. A Sunderland fan’s witty jab at Dylan left O’Hara and Cundy in hysterics live on air.

“These Mackems man, they thought they were going to win the league when they won their first couple of games. Literally, I don’t think any other side in Premier League history has had an easier first eight games,” he said.

O’Hara and Cundy called Dylan “bitter” for his comments about a team. Dylan responded, suggesting they wait for matches against stronger teams at St James’ Park. O’Hara then playfully brought Sunderland fan Jordan into the discussion, saying Dylan was criticising Sunderland. Jordan retorted, telling Dylan to “mind the gap.”

“I love it,” Danny Welbeck said after the game. “I have the passion and love for football. It’s what I want to do. I feel good. I feel strong and fit so I won’t be stopping soon.

On playing into his 40s, he added: “I’m not looking that far ahead. I’m just enjoying my football and feeling strong. I’m enjoying the present.”

He goes on: “It’s a big win. At home, we’ve not quite had the results we wanted to get this season. We wanted to be better and we knew we could be better today.

“It was an incredible pass from Georgi. We have an incredible connection. We’re looking to build on that, keep on progressing and getting better.

“It’s always difficult to win a Premier League game. We’ve had many times where we’ve gone ahead and maybe not got the points. We have the mentality to go again and get the points.

“It’s nice to get another goal and put us in a winning position. We want to build a fortress and we’re on our way to doing that.”

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler:

“I never thought we would lose it, so I have the biggest belief in my team. We showed resilience, character and personality.

“We kept the structure quite well and I’m really pleased. The key thing was a good structure and being patient, so don’t force it.

“Have different patterns in the final third. I thought we had a good variation, a good flexibility. I was pleased. Overall, in possession, it was really good.”

Howe said: “We are disappointed with the first half performance, really. We faded and the last half hour was hard to watch. Brighton scored in that period. We were pleased to get in at 1-0 and regroup.

“[The midfield] are brilliant players but they didn’t function well today. But I don’t think the team did.

“When we conceded the second goal, we were the dominant team. We responded really well in the second half. They didn’t have many attacks in that spell but they did go and score.”

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris:

“Important win, tough win. I think we started well. I’m really pleased with the first half, it was like expected.

“We had our game plan, managed the press, created chances, generated strong momentum. We scored once, which was positive, but my regret is we didn’t score the second goal.

“It’s normal to expect after this first half a reaction from our opponent. They did well second half so it was totally different.

“But we defended together, showed this togetherness again, this ability to suffer together and kept this clean sheet, which is positive.”

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira:

“I look for my team and I see a team mentally connected with good spirit, with character, trying the best to change the situation.

“If you remember the last game, we had two chances to score the second goal against Brighton. We didn’t and after we conceded the goal.

“This is the moment that we need to change with a win. We must win the next game because it’s very important for us.

“Today, it was very important for us. We need to improve the way that we attack the box, the way we are crossing and when we assist well, we need to score.”

Wolves fans vent frustration after sixth defeat in eight as Sunderland continue impressive start

Fans reacted amid cheeky digs from Danny Welbeck and Sunderland fan as they ‘mug off’ Newcastle…

@agbnufc_: Some shocking individual performances this season.

@PaulHenry11: At this rate fucking Sunderland will finish above us. What a joke

@Bettyblack74: Sunderland will batter us at this rate

@SensibleSAFC: There’s Sunderland’s apparent easy start resulting in another win. Down on the south coast however, former #SAFC man Daniel Welbeck ensures yet another defeat for #NUFC – the wheels have come off for the Geordie nation #MindTheGap

@OwenH04: Bournemouth away, Brighton away etc etc far too many bogey games we never seem to mentally be able to approach properly. Holding the club back massively

@ADLFC0: 12th and getting mugged off by Sunderland no wonder Isak wanted out.

@ToonToo87466111: Only Eddie Howe would go with an unchanged team after Gordon, Elanga, Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton played for their country this week. He could’ve started with Ramsey, Miley and Murphy but hes just orived yet again hes not the manager to take us all the way. Howe out Mourinho in.

@HuskyKM1: Absolutely poor from everyone expect Woltemade and Murphy. Woltemade is special. What a player he is. Murphy is the only winger who has a good final third. Looks sharp. Can pass well. He needs to start. Deserves to start after last season.

@SilverWeb17: Simply not good enough..!! Those who desire and enjoy mediocre then keep clapping.!! Those of us who were around back in 96 knew what it was to seriously challenge for the title (should have won it) but, I am afraid this will not cut it and it stops with one person.. I can hear all those mediocre, nostalgia fans jumping on any negativity towards them, but the trophy was great but we cannot live on that forever. There are some players that need clearing out (midfielders are just too similar) and there needs to be different ideas and alternative tactics when needed.! We sit now just 4 points off the bottom 3.!
