Charlton and Portsmouth issue statement with match abandoned after medical emergency

Charlton and Portsmouth issue a statement with their match abandoned after a medical emergency in the Covered Lower End.

Play was halted on the 13th minute of the Championship fixture, when players and supporters alerted the referee.

Players then went down the tunnel while the fan received treatment from first responders and then left the stand later on.

Sadly it has since been confirmed that the supporter has died.

Charlton saying: “The club are devastated to report that a Charlton Athletic supporter has died following a medical emergency during today’s game at The Valley against Portsmouth.

“The match was halted in the 12th minute while the supporter received treatment and was subsequently postponed.

“The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but sadly the supporter later passed away in hospital.

“The club are grateful to supporters in attendance and the Portsmouth players and staff for their patience and understanding as this tragedy unfolded.

“Everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

Reporter Louis Mendez wrote: “The game is being paused due to a medical emergency in the crowd. ⏱️ 13′ 🔴

“The fan is being removed on a stretcher. It’s worth remembering that family members/friends of the supporter may well be on here so might be best not sharing details of who it is publicly. ⏱️ 25′ 🔴 #cafc 0-0 #pompey 🔵

“Dave Lockwood on the PA system has just said it will be a while before they can give a further update and thanked the supporters in the ground for their patience. ⏱️ 51′ 🔴 #cafc 0-0 #pompey 🔵

“The game has been abandoned.

Thoughts are with the supporter involved, their friends and family and everyone in the ground today. ❤️”

Charlton Athletic tweeted: “15′ Play has been temporarily paused due to a medical emergency in the Covered End Lower.

“The players have been taken off the pitch as treatment continues.

“Due to a medical emergency in the crowd, today’s match has been abandoned.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding. Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter affected and thank our medical team and first responders.

“Information on when the match will be rescheduled will be announced in due course.”

Portsmouth posted on their website: “Pompey’s Championship match against Charlton at The Valley has been abandoned following a medical incident in the home section of the crowd.

“Our thoughts and best wishes are with the individual involved and their family.

“The club will provide information on a new date for the fixture and ticketing arrangements in due course.”
