Championship clubs aim cheeky digs at Southampton during fixture announcement

A couple of Championship clubs have took to aim cheeky digs at Southampton during the fixture announcement on Thursday afternoon.

In May, Southampton beat Middlesbrough to book a place in the Championship playoff final, only to be thrown out of the playoffs to spying on Boro, Oxford and Ipswich.

Southampton start the 2026/27 season on minus four points. Birmingham City and Wrexham didn’t waste time in poking fun over Spygate, with their posts on social media going viral.

Birmingham wrote: “One of the other key fixtures to keep an eye on… 🔎” while Wrexham said “Taking us into the international break 🕵️”

Jeremy Langdon spoke to Sky Sports News: “They start the season on minus four points and it means a lot of problems for them against other Championship clubs who are going to remind them at every opportunity about the spying.

“The away games this season will be tough for Southampton. That fixture was off the scale last season, were two draws in that fixture. This season the Pompey fans will delight in rubbing Saints fans’ noses in it.

“Boro is a key fixture for Southampton fans and Boro fans have a real axe to grind over the spying and everything that happened in May.

“But there is still so much uncertainty about Southampton going into the new season. had Dragan Solak, the owner, he is not going to sack their manager Tonda Eckert.

“We had Tonda Eckert coming out to apologise after the spying scandal.

“And we have players still who we don’t know are going to be playing for Southampton in the new season, giving the uncertainty still about Tonda Eckert.”
