Celtic player deletes Twitter and Instagram accounts

One particular Celtic player deletes his Twitter and Instagram social media accounts amid the controversial trip to Dubai.

Hoops defender Shane Duffy has got rid of his channels after leaving Celtic’s Dubai training camp, which was slammed by the Scottish government.

Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has warned that the Glasgow giants are not to abuse the leeway they were given after photos went viral

In tweets posted on Tuesday afternoon, reporter Raman Bhardwaj quoted the First Minister as saying: “I’ve seen some photographs…that would raise a question in my mind about whether all the rules of what elite players have to do within their bubbles around social distancing are being complied with…so I think there are things that should be looked into.

“Elite sport has been in a privileged position over the last year doing things that the general public can’t do…It’s really important they don’t abuse it, that they use it for the purposes intended and that applies to Celtic as it would to anyone else in that position.”

BBC Scotland Sports News Correspondent Chris McLaughlin quoted the First Minister as saying: “We gave the SFA advice over elite training camps but it’s not up to us to sign off travel plans. The question is the purpose of them being there.”

Speaking to the BBC on Monday about Celtic’s trip, Deputy First Minister John Swinney said: “I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t think it’s a particularly great example to set.”

Shane Duffy, who is currently on loan from Brighton, was pictured boarding a flight to London Heathrow earlier this week.

It is understood that the Republic of Ireland skipper had to urgently fly back due to deal with a personal family issue.

Duffy is known to have been an active on both Twitter and Instagram since his loan move to Parkhead, but he has since closed both accounts.

He was expected to add some experience in Celtic’s defence which has been disappointing this season, though his loan switch from Brighton hasn’t gone to plan either, with Lennon playing him during the defeat to Rangers when Nir Bitton – a midfielder starting at the back – was sent off.

Ex-Celtic defender Adam Virgo reckons Shane Duffy would have struggled even more against Rangers in a packed Ibrox stadium – especially after how much he was nervous in the closed doors fixture.

“I dread to think what Shane would have been like with a full crowd [at Ibrox],” Virgo said. “I think it would have been ten times worse for him. He looked a bag of nerves coming on against Rangers. Signings like this can happen, like myself.

“Unfortunately for Shane he’s made too many mistakes which have led to goals. Neil’s going to be very brave to stick with him. I don’t think Shane can say he has not been given chances.”

Virgo predicted that Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton, who brought Duffy to the AMEX Stadium in 2016, would be keeping a keen eye on the centre-half’s contract situation with a possible reunion in mind.

“I don’t see Shane going back to Brighton because he won’t get in the side,” Virgo told The Brighton & Hove Independent.

“Other clubs will take him in the Championship. I guarantee Chris Hughton, who had him at Brighton, would snap him up at Nottingham Forest.”

Fans reacted after seeing that the Celtic player deletes his Twitter and Instagram accounts amid the Dubai trip row…

@WestMidsLoyal: Shane Duffy has deleted all his social media accounts. First thing he’s managed to clear all season

@PaulMcG1994: Shane Duffy deleting his social media isn’t a surprise tbh. Clearly struggling and with how toxic our fans have been this season it’s the best thing for him to do. Definitely not had the best of times but trying to play on while coping with losing a parent is a tough battle

@celticforever9: Shane Duffy has deleted Twitter? I don’t blame him tbh. Can’t be nice reading all the shit about yourself.

@newcosnedders: Shane Duffy has went full Andy muirhead and deleted all his social media

@ScotFail1: Another Billy big baws who couldn’t handle the Scottish game! Telt ye he was pish!
