Carlton Palmer taunts Portsmouth fans amid Sheffield Wednesday form ahead of the two sides’ meeting come Saturday afternoon.
Portsmouth supporters mocked him over his belief that Sheffield Wednesday would win the League One title. He believes that Saturday’s match won’t change the race.
The Owls make a trip to Fratton Park, sitting as the leaders on goal difference to Plymouth Argyle.
But Portsmouth only place 10th and are 10 points behind the playoff spots with Sheffield Wednesday 13 points head of their upcoming opponents.
Portsmouth had been expected to be one of the teams in promotion contention, like every season, when the campaign started. In January, however, Danny Cowley was axed by Pompey, with the club now in 10th position.
Cowley was at the helm for the 3-3 draw when Portsmouth went to Hillsborough back in July on what was the opening day of the season.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru getting the hosts level on 81 minutes after Pompey had twice come from behind to lead from the 64th minute.
Palmer claims that Sheffield Wednesday have proven they are title as League One winners, and will finish ahead of Portsmouth regardless Saturday’s match. He also took aim at the Pompey fanbase who mocked him for backing the Owls to win the title.
“All you Portsmouth fans who gave me a lot of stick at the start of the season for saying the Owls would win the league and I was underestimating Portsmouth, you seem to have gone quiet,” Palmer wrote on Twitter.
He added: “Whatever happens [on] Saturday, we will win the league and finish ahead of Portsmouth.”
Portsmouth currently have a game in hand over Derby for the last of the playoff place, with Shrewsbury, Peterborough and Wycombe sitting above the South Coast outfit, who have two fixtures in hand over Bolton in fifth place. But Portsmouth will need results elsewhere to go their way in the playoff battle.
