Carabao Cup set for big change next season with teams ditched

The Carabao Cup could be set for a big change next season with Premier League teams who finish in the top seven in the current campaign getting ditched.

According to The Times, there would be a fixture pile-up for teams involved in European competitions.

It could mean the League Cup is played without many of the big boys come next term – which will be an advantage for many.

It was confirmed on Thursday that the Champions League and Europa League schedules run well into August, meaning those involved are highly unlikely to participate in the Carabao Cup ties as things stand, and the EFL are in discussions with what that will mean for their competition.

The report suggests decisions are yet to be made, but there is a real possibility the top seven could be left out.

The much talked about alternative could be to get rid of the competition for a season, however it would cause further financial damage to lower league clubs who already face uncertain times.

Another idea floated is to allow teams to play youth sides – similarly to what Liverpool did against Everton this season when their busy schedule and Club World Cup ties clashed with the League Cup.

If the new proposal goes ahead, it would ruin the integrity of the competition, something the EFL would fear.

It’s said the EFL would look to secure compensation as part of a £250m rescue package from the Premier League if that were to be the case,.

The report suggests the current circumstances could give top clubs an excuse to pull out of the competition for good.

But they are determined to find a solution, even it means temporary changes.

The new season looks set to start around the end of August / beginning of September, a month later than usual, and with the dates for next year’s Euros recently announced, it would be likely to result in fixture congestion.
