Cambridge’s Lyle Taylor receives red card for off-the-ball incident on Bolton player

Cambridge’s Lyle Taylor receives a red card for an off-the-ball incident on Bolton player Jack Iredale in the 91st minute.

Bolton produced a comeback in the second half, netting twice within 11 minutes to secure a 2-1 victory over Cambridge and move closer to the automatic promotion places in League One.

Paris Maghoma and Carlos Mendes Gomes got Bolton out of trouble, after Cambridge had put up a strong defensive display in the first half and took an early lead in the ninth minute.

Maghoma’s mistake allowed Sullay Kaikai to deliver a low cross that deflected off Bolton defender Eoin Toal and into the net.

Kaikai had a chance to extend Cambridge’s lead, but his shot was saved by Joel Coleman.

“We played really well in the first half against a really top side and we ended strongly in the last 20 minutes,” Cambridge manager Neil Harris told Cambridge Independent.

“I was disappointed with the 20 minutes at the start of the second half. Bolton are a really good side, but they have dominated much more than they dominated tonight in every (other) game.

“They are the best possession-based team in the league and they have got a lot of dangerous players. That is why they are going to get promoted and I wish them every luck with that.

“Tonight, we gave a really good account of ourselves. The second goal is a really good goal, an unbelievable ball and finish, but the first goal is really poor by us.

“You can’t play against the best side in the league and get beat by a set-play.”

“I have not seen it back,” Harris added on the red card. “I am not going to go and see the ref and ask what his thoughts are. There was just too much making it up as he went on tonight.

“We will watch it back and if there is a right to appeal, if Lyle was harshly done by, then we will certainly appeal. If it was (a red card), obviously we will take our medicine.”

Bolton boss Ian Evatt said post-match: “These boys; the resilience, the character they show on a daily basis I’m incredibly proud of them. Being at the top of divisions is extremely challenging and high pressure, especially with the expectations we are carrying, and they keep finding a way and the right solutions.

“The players showed incredible character, resilience and bravery in the second half. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb again, giving away a poor soft goal with a heavy deflection and that can sometimes go against you.

“We deserved to get in front and after that we had to dig in and fight and see it out. These players show unbelievable amounts of bravery and resilience on a daily basis and I’m extremely proud of them tonight.”

“We had some pressure from corners and again (it shows) the value and importance of set-play goals,” added Evatt. “And then we’ve just shown a real moment of quality with the pass and the run from Carlos. I’m delighted for him. He’s had a stop-start time with us, with injury and then going away to AFCON.

“But we told him he’s going to be a big part of what we do and a big player for us and he showed that moment of quality to win us the game. He’s waited patiently and worked hard and waited for that moment and today he took that moment.

“That’s the same for them all. It’s very much a team game. The lads who haven’t got on tonight, they’ve got to be prepared and ready for that moment.

“And the fans, for travelling down again. A huge ‘thank-you’ to them. It makes such a difference for us. In the second half they were our 12th man again and every credit for every fan that made the journey tonight. We needed them.”
