Burnley v Blackburn halted after fireworks from outside Turf Moor lands on the pitch mid-game

Sunday afternoon’s Burnley v Blackburn had to be halted after fireworks from outside Turf Moor lands on the pitch mid-game.

The Clarets overwhelmed their rivals with three second-half goals as Vincent Kompany’s Clarets returned to the top of the Championship in style.

Ashley Barnes opened his Championship account for the season to score a brace either side of one from Belgian winger Anass Zaroury, as Rovers ended up on the wrong side of a local derby hammering.

In the first league meeting between the two old East Lancashire rivals, which was over six-and-a-half years, it was goalless at half time as the hosts took until just before the break to test visiting keeper Thomas Kaminski.

However Barnes got the first goal of the game on 55 minutes, timing his run to meet Zaroury’s left-wing cross and power a header into the bottom right corner.

They then made it 2-0 on 74 minutes when Barnes’ right-foot volley on the turn was well saved by Kaminski, the ball ran loose and Zaroury drilled in a low right-foot shot from the edge of the box – for his sixth goal of the season.

Barnes, who had also found the net in the 3-1 midweek Carabao Cup win over Crawley, wrapped up the scoring nine minutes from time.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany says it was his side’s most complete performance of the season against rivals Blackburn.

Burnley: Arijanet, Muric, Vitinho, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Jordan Beyer, Ian Maatsen (Charlie Taylor, 82), Josh Cullen, Jack Cork, Josh Brownhill, Anass Zaroury (Johann Berg Gudmundsson, 85), Manuel Benson (Nathan Tella, 71), Ashley Barnes (Halil Dervisoglu, 85)

Subs: Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Connor Roberts, Samuel Bastien

Rovers: Thomas Kaminski, Ryan Hedges, Dom Hyam, Daniel Ayala, Clinton Mola, Callum Brittain, Lewis Travis (Bradley Dack, 76), Tyler Morton, Jake Garrett (John Buckley, 69), Sam Gallagher (Jack Vale, 53), Ben Brereton

Subs: Aynsley Pears, Harry Pickering, Scott Wharton, Tyrhys Dolan

JDT: “It’s been a difficult afternoon, we didn’t perform that well, for sure not what we had planned.

“You could see that bravery and courage that we’ve had the last weeks, when the lads have done excellently, we didn’t have that, against a good side.

“I feel disappointed for our fans, we brought all those fans, and you can see we’re still inconsistent at this level which we’ve spoken about.

“This break will be good for the squad to get a bit of rest and then we work on the training pitch.

“The lads have done great in this period, getting results with a new side and early in our journey.

“It’s a disappointing afternoon.

“It was of course a game without many chances at that time.

“Burnley had the ball, we were quite solid, defensively we were good but on the ball we weren’t.

“We didn’t make the right decisions and when you concede the first goal you know that it’s going to be tough.

“I think it’s quite normal that when a team scores a goal it gives you extra energy, the other team lacks that a bit.

“It’s a good side, we shouldn’t forget that.

“The first goal was a cross, and plenty of bodies in the box, but you have to see that when you concede goals there are always mistakes, and when you concede it’s the opposition who make mistakes.”

Burnley’s Vincent Kompany: “It’s massive. We’re obviously still playing for promotion, but it’s one of the ways for us to get our trophies and winning this game is massive for our fans. It will give us a lift for the next games.

“I had no reason to be worried after the Sheffield United game. Today the team was fresh and that’s what they have been doing all season, so we’ve just got to keep going.”
