Brighton troll Man Utd with chants as Old Trafford empties in the 72nd minute

Brighton take to cheekily troll Man Utd with a series of chants as those those inside Old Trafford empties in the 72nd minute.

Ex-United striker Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for Brighton, with Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro adding second half goals after poor defending.

Hannibal Mejbri replied for the hosts, but the 3-1 defeat means that United have now lost three of their opening five Premier League games.

Boos rang out from the home fans left in the ground by full time. It’s interesting to know however that Man Utd lose at home for the first time in more than a year in the Premier League with the last team to do it being Brighton.

Brighton fans also could be heard singing chants directed at Man Utd, such as “He left because you’re shit”, “your city is blue” and “can we play you every week”,

Subs: Fati (7), Pedro (7), Gilmour (6), Milner (6), Ferguson (n/a).

Player of the match: Tariq Lamptey.

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen to BBC Match of the Day: “It is a heavy one. We have to look at ourselves. We changed some things but we are disappointed.

“In the first half we had a lot of moments, had good control. They had a lot of possession but not many chances. They then score with their first chance and the system they play they keep the ball a lot and we had to chase it down. But we still had chances to get back into the game.”

On what needs to be done to turn things around: “The small things. We had the offside at Arsenal and today when we scored but it was out of play. The small things we are missing and a bit of luck to get over the line and get something out of the effort we put in.

“Any game at the start of the season, doesn’t matter who you play, is very important. We focus on our games and whoever we play we want to win. But we have lost three already and we have to change that.”

Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele to Premier League production: “It feels great. A great win. Away at Old Trafford, it is an amazing feeling. We deserved it too, we played with courage, with a big heart and definitely deserved to win.

“We want to play on the front foot, aggressive, United played a bit different to what we expected, so we had to get to grips with that. But after 10-15 minutes we settled down and got a foothold in the game.”

On making six changes and still winning: “It doesn’t happen in the Premier League very often but we believe it each other. The manager believes in us more importantly. We know how it is going to be this season but we trust him 100%.

“We are a team of good guys who fight for each other and we have a leader in our boss who gives us good information.”

On rotating in goal with Bart Verbruggen: “it’s different but it is what it is, He’s the boss. He changed my life last season, by having trust and faith in me, so whatever he wants from me I’ll give him.”

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi to Sky Sports: “We played a great, great game. We deserved to win, we played well. In the first 15, 20 minutes we suffered a lot because Man United played in a different way than we prepared for but after that we played a great game.

“I think the game was changed when we kept the ball. In that moment their pressure was strong and to keep the ball helped us to control the game and then we have four attackers who are very fast and very good.

“We have to keep our style when we are losing, when we are wining. We can’t forget our DNA because the game can change and it’s bad when the result can change our style. We are working to not lose our characteristic, our quality and to score more goals. We scored three but had many chances to score again.”

On his experience with Brighton: “I must admit I feel I know I’m very lucky to be this coach for this team. it’s like I dream because I am enjoying it a lot, enjoying to watch my team playing, showing their quality. It’s an honour, I’m proud.”

On the Europa League starting: “Thursday will be a historic day for us, the fans, the club, the owner. We ant to play we and keep in our head the memory from that day.”

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports: “We are disappointed. But it was really small margins. We are so close against a good side. The first 20 minutes was all ours. We created chances but didn’t score. We conceded a goal with their first attack. We then had a period in the game that was quite difficult, we fought to get a goal and it was disallowed. So it is difficult in this period. It has not fallen on our side, but we will fight back and if we stick together, play as a team, stick to the rules, we will return.”

On what he said at half-time: “There’s always some improvements to make, especially the organisation. But is was not our day.

“The second goal was straight after half-time. Second chance second goal, very clinical. It was a setback we did not deal with so good. but we have to keep positive in such moments and stick together and you will get back onto the game.

“You learn many things from such a game. From the mental side, you can keep strong in moments but I have seen some good stuff. the way we created many chances we are just not finishing them, but that will change.”

On reaction to Rasmus Hojlund being substituted: “He is coming with a small issue and we have to be careful but the reception of the fans was great. His game was great and the fans embraced it. He was unlucky with the disallowed goal, it would have been a great afternoon for him. It was not the case but he will keep going. He is a strong character as we are as a team and we will push back.”

On return to Champions League this week: “It is a great opportunity against a great opponent. We are all looking forward to being back in the Champions League where we belong. But you have to fight for it, prove yourself every time as a team and as an individual”.
