Bolton’s Ian Evatt in heated moment with officials after controversial decision

Bolton’s Ian Evatt got in a heated moment with officials after their controversial decision to rule out a goal in Monday night’s game.

The Trotters had a goal disallowed as they couldn’t find themselves a winner despite dominating much of their League One fixture against Burton Albion.

In front of the Sky Sports cameras at the University of Bolton Stadium, neither side could break the deadlock, with some feeling aggrieved at certain refereeing calls made in-game.

Bolton thought they had scored in the first half when Kieran Lee turned home a Lloyd Isgrove cross, however it was disallowed for offside after Eoin Doyle was adjudged to have been in Ben Garratt’s line of sight.

Evatt’s side recorded 74% possession against the Brewers, just showing how much they controlled the game, and Nathan Delfouneso could have won a penalty in injury time after being fouled in the box by Frazer Blake-Tracy, while John Brayford was sent off for a second bookable offence against Dapo Afolayan.

After the stalemate, Ian Evatt spoke to the media and here’s his immediate reaction, and despite feeling frustrated at the ref’s decision making, he can come away feeling proud of his team’s performance. Here’s what he said via Manchester Evening News.

A night of frustration?

“You can say that again! I must say I’m so proud of my team. I think that’s the best we’ve played certainly this season. Lincoln arguably, but we’ve done everything but score and we have scored, but probably the least said about that the better.”

You’ve been to see the referee – can you tell us anything?

“Not really. I don’t really know what I have to be honest. I’m sat here thinking why did I bother, but it’s difficult for officials. It’s heat of the moment, things happen quickly and people make mistakes, but rather than speak about that, I’d rather speak about how good my team were.”

Just for the record, did you think the offside goal which was disallowed should have stood and the penalty towards the end?

“I think everybody that’s seen it back and fortunately for us, the whole country have, would say that it’s a goal and it’s a stonewall penalty at the end.”

Overall, you had a lot of shots on goal but not too many on target?

“People can say that, but there’s eight bodies in the box. There’s so many bodies in the box that it;s bound to hit one.

“If it was a boxing match, they’d have stopped it. The pleasing thing for me was 74% possession translated into final third detail, shots, creation of opportunities, and regardless of those two decisions, we had enough chances to score and should have scored.

“But I’m just so proud of them because they’ve shown the whole country what a good team they are.”

Fans reacted as Bolton’s Ian Evatt gets in a heated moment with officials after the much talked about controversial decision…

@MjAspartan117: How that ain’t a goal nothing is, the lad was clearly offside but wasn’t no way infringing with play. The keeper pulls his arms away and then complains so robbed!!

@MurphyJL17: Absolutely robbed.

@silentsighbolt: Player pressure – ref and Lino cave in

@MikeyBoy025: That’s a shocker from the Officials. 😲 Perfectly good goal .

@FootyWithLea: Absolutely shambolic decision.

@LiamYates5: Shambles. Surprised, no

@michael__doran: Weak refereeing. Standard of officiating lower down in the leagues is so poor.

@Damon_J_Jordan: Controversial, but that refereeing performance is one of the better ones I’ve seen in the last 3 years in lower leagues. That’s how atrocious the standard is.

@hrama3: Officials causing havoc yet again.

@LeePhil45598748: Right decision

@SteveFrumTarn: Barnsley had a goal wrongly disallowed against Bolton in the cup the other week. The Bolton fans I saw on here called unhappy fans sore losers. Hope none of the same are now complaining about this.

@joegaskell88: Hop off your camel and back into reality sunshine, he was miles off that night. You were held by a second string league 1 side a few weeks ago and that’s all there is to it.

@Adam_Hooper10: Another awful decision to add the ever growing list @EFL sort your refs out ffs

@jukeyisdead: how have the officials given that offside? ball isn’t anywhere close enough to him.

@lewisjw15: Disgusting from the officials. Did everything in their power to stop us winning that.

@mdbrierley: Great refereeing

@k_bwfc: Fucking joke these EFL refs need sacking

@OldManWinter999: What a crybaby little bitch that Burton keeper is. Knew he’d messed up and didn’t save it so ran crying to the linesman who bottled it and caved in. Absolutely nothing wrong with it

@DanMRoberts1: The 1980s called, theyre very pleased to have their offside rule back

@D4NNY_F0X: Nothing wrong with the goal, very poor refereeing. Yes he’s offside but doesn’t interfere with play and isn’t obstructing the keeper’s view..

@DecSmith7: Shocking decision! 😡

@TinyPilgrim: Burton Albion were skinned alive, the officials have been shown up on national television, and Brayford is a waste of oxygen.

@ab1d03: That is never offside #bwfc

@MatthewRushton7: We had the ball in the net, there’s nothing wrong with the goal, but it’s clear the officials left their balls at home 🤦‍♂️

@Stesmith1992: When are refs going tougher on players surrounding them when a decision doesn’t go there way, if they want to get better in the lower leagues they need to stamp it out @EFL #bwfc

@joebrookes2: Embarrassing decision that

@harrystockton97: Shocker

@k_bwfc: @EFL sort your refs out thanks

@Nathancufc: That’s offside? Don’t see why they’re complaining

@mattj_362: Are #bwfc fans thick as shit. Interfering with the keeper has always been an offside

@TomLordy1991: 100% a goal. Pathetic

@grassrootsrefJa: For me that should stand but can understand especially from the assistant referee’s angle why it was given offside. It’s a very close call #BWFC #BAFC

@naivetactician: Oh dear bit harsh 🤣 #wafc

@joeybwfc: How does that goal not stand? My head’s gone.

@JackBannister94: This account is not a safe space for Linesmen. Fuck assistant referees.

@joey__burton__: Not only is that never offside, neither official wanted to give it until the Burton complaints began. Player influence at its best IMO…

@BigLegDrop: Still don’t understand it. Didn’t move towards the ball, actively looked to get out of the way and yet still offside

@DannyPillo91: That is an absolutely DREADFUL decision #bwfc

@H34th3r87: Absolute bullshit decision 🤬 #BWFC

@bwfctalk: We’ve had the benefit of replay after replay whilst the ref has to make a decision there and then. I’m not happy with the decision but my point is I can understand why it was given – ref has to make a decision there and then and was clearly influenced by the lino #bwfc
