Bolton have last laugh over Wigan with 92 minute winner and manager Ryan Lowe sent off

Bolton Wanderers have the last laugh over Wigan Athletic with 92 minute winner and Latics manager Ryan Lowe getting sent off.

Chris Forino’s stoppage-time goal secured Bolton’s first victory over Wigan in over a decade, ending a drought that lasted since January 2015.

The goal came from a corner that Forino bundled in, sparking dramatic scenes as Wigan manager Ryan Lowe was sent off with a red card and goalkeeping coach Andy Lonergan received a yellow amid technical area tensions.

Bolton dominated much of the match, with Joel Randall and George Thomason coming close, and Aaron Collins had been denied by a deflection.

Wigan’s Maleace Asamoah missed a key chance, and despite a resilient defence, they couldn’t prevent Forino’s late, scrappy winner from another corner.

The result sees Bolton sitting 6th, in the League One playoff places, with 63 points from 39 games played, Wigan are 18th with 44 points from 38 games played and 5 points above the drop zone.

Latics First Team Coach Glenn Whelan, per wiganathletic.com: “Losing any game is disappointing – but the way we did so late on in the game was a real kick in the teeth.

“You’ve got to give credit to our lads – we dug in unbelievably well and created a lot of chances.

“We had a derby feel about us today – and there wasn’t much given considering both managers know each other really well.

“There wasn’t much in it and a few ricochets in and around the box, and unfortunately for us, they managed to sneak a late one.

“It’s disappointing to lose any game, but we’ve got to keep our heads up and take the positives.

“We want to thank the fans. They came out in their numbers, and even after we conceded, they still stayed in their numbers.

“We’re all really disappointed because it’s the one you want to win and come away with praise.

“Unfortunately today wasn’t meant to be. There’s a lot of football still to be played, and we need to turn things around quickly.”

Bolton’s Steven Schumacher said, per the club website: “It’s been a long time coming to beat these.

“There have been some painful days over the last few years against them. To win it in the last minute, in a real scrappy game, the goal just about summed it up.

“But doesn’t really matter. All that matters is that we come out of it with the right result that we wanted and to get three points and send our incredible fans home like that, happy. I’m just delighted.

“It did mean a lot and I did have a sense of it. I think the magnitude of it hit me as I walked out of the tunnel at the start of the game. When I saw the atmosphere, I’m thinking, ‘oh my God, this is a proper derby game’.

“When I went into the changing room that was the first thing I said to the players, because they’re all coming in on a high. I said, ‘look, I’ve sensed that this means a lot to you, and it’s my first experience of it. It’s not their first experience of it, and, as I say, they’ve had some difficult days against these as well.

“So to win it in that way that we did was fantastic and they should enjoy it tonight, because it’s not been easy. But, again, my last message was to get back to work on Thursday, get our feet on the ground and get ready to go again.”
