Bolton cancel pre-season friendly with Oldham following backlash

Bolton Wanderers have decided to cancel a pre-season friendly with Oldham Athletic following some backlash from supporters.

The Trotters has confirmed that the game – which was initially scheduled to take place at Boundary Park on the 12th of July – has now been axed.

The Bolton Wanderers Supporters Trust met with Wanderers CEO Neil Hart last week over concerned that had been raised by fans of both clubs, and this has since led to a U-turn over playing the friendly this summer.

A short statement released read: “Wanderers have called off their planned pre-season friendly at Oldham Athletic.

“The Whites were due to go to Boundary Park to face the National League side on Tuesday, July 12.

“However, we are mindful of the reaction of some supporters to the scheduled fixture and will now not be playing the game.

“Wanderers will make alternative arrangements to supplement game-time for Ian Evatt’s squad as they build up to the 2022/23 season.”

@BwfcFans wrote at the time of hearing the friendly was planned: “Let’s not give the owner of #oafc a single penny in the friendly at their ground. We know what it’s like to have crooked owners – our money will only go into their pockets – the football family should stick together 👍 #bwfc”

Push The Boundary @PTB_OAFC replied: “100% this!!!! We are currently raising money to buy our stadium and secure our future, so if you did want to help us do that, the price of a ticket would be well it would be well received and greatly appreciated 💙🙏🏼 #oafc #bwfc

“Donations can be made here. This is about fans wrestling control back. It’s clear that our owner won’t go without a fight, but it’s a fight that we are more than up for! We were here before him, and we will be here after him! #oafc #bwfc

There were again calls to boycott Boundary Park with fans told not to attend this fixture as to not give the custodian of our club ANY money.

Push The boundary then said with the game postponed: “We have campaigned for this behind the scenes and it’s great to know that the opinions of BOTH sets of supporters has been taken into consideration, and that the right decision has been made. Thank you to all parties involved.

“Again, fans have a MASSIVE part to play”

Fans reacted as Bolton cancel the pre-season friendly with Oldham following backlash…

@sambucawasevil: Thank you from every Oldham fan

@DavidELSE13: Thank you for your support Bolton. Our regime need to become pariahs from the entire football community. It’s going to be a long road to get them out but this support really helps #bwfc #oafc

@RussWWFC: Excellent, starve their owner of cash to hasten his departure. Give the fixture to a club with a more deserving ownership.

@SettingFactory: Respect and gratitude to all at BWFC.

@chrisdunn80: Judging by the comments from Oldham fans it sounds like the right decision. Hopefully they’ll have new owners in 12 months and we can play them then.

@OAFCNick: Big local rivals… But even bigger respect!

@rahaigh: Kudos to all Bolton fans for making this happen and to @OfficialBWFC for listening to their fans. That’s what it looks like @OfficialOAFC to work with fans than against them

@andy171076: Thank you to all involved at Bolton Wanderers for the support. Will not be forgotten.

@GrandpaGarner: The right decision, can we arrange to play Bury instead.

@JayCarnegie: Yes Bolton love that 🙌🏼 thank you for helping us take a stand against poor ownership

@DazOAFC72:

@the_sensefield: Club owners with integrity and a willingness to listen to supporters. Wishing #oafc well in their battle with the the exact opposite. It’s a shitty situation, we know from bitter experience.

@dan_snook: That’s what you get. You’re fighting a war you cannot and will not win. Sell the club and leave. Massive thanks to the Trotters. #oafc #bwfc

@AdamCha57040838: It’s a breath of fresh air having owners at Bolton who listen to our fans, I hope the Oldham owner can sell up after this and give the Oldham supporters what they want. Good luck for the future Oldham fans.

@greeneyes_uk: Many thanks to all the Bolton fans. As said- we’re big rivals but big respect to you for doing this.

@KevinAn41829648: Well done wanderers! Solidarity with real fans!

@ProudBW: Sell the club and give it back to the fans. Best of luck to Oldham will be following your results next season
