BBC to televise classic FA Cup quarter finals this weekend instead of what should have been this year’s two ties which have been suspended.
They were initially set to show all Premier League ties in Manchester City’s meeting at Newcastle United and Manchester United’s trip to Norwich City though they have since replaced it.

On Part 1 of their rewind episode, the BBC say: “Guy Mowbray digs deep into the TV archives to unearth some classic games from the FA Cup sixth round. This programme includes Wycombe Wanderers’ trip to Leicester in 2001, where the injury-hit Chairboys fielded a striker named Roy Essandoh – signed after an appeal for players who were not cup-tied on the BBC’s Ceefax service. Also featured is Watford’s trip to Arsenal in 1987 – the first season of George Graham’s tenure as Gunners boss. The Arsenal team featured a young Tony Adams and David Rocastle, while the talents of John Barnes and Luther Blissett were among those on display for Graham Taylor’s Watford side. West Bromwich Albion’s meeting with eventual league champions Nottingham Forest in the 1978 season is also relived.
For Part 2 of their rewind episode, the BBC added: “Guy Mowbray looks at more FA Cup sixth-round classics from years gone by. This show centres on Everton’s meeting with Ipswich in 1985. Howard Kendall’s Toffees side were the cup holders following their victory over Watford the previous May, and they had also not conceded a goal since the sixth round the previous year. Ipswich, on the other hand, were struggling at the wrong end of the table. Yet, as ever, the Cup made a mockery of league positions. Derby and Sheffield Wednesday were also involved in an equally intriguing and entertaining tie at the Baseball Ground in 1993. Trevor Francis’s visitors were looking to maintain a proud cup record that season, having already reached the League Cup semi-finals. The other game sees Manchester United, the eventual league champions from the 2007-08 campaign, take on Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth side at Old Trafford. ”
To summarize, the classic FA Cup quarter finals BBC are to televise this weekend are:
– Watford v Arsenal from 1987
– West Bromwich Albion v Nottingham Forest from 1978
– Leicester City v Wycombe Wanderers from 2001
– Everton v Ipswich Town from 1985
– Derby County v Sheffield Wednesday from 1993
– Manchester United v Portsmouth from 2008
