Barnet manager Dean Brennan demands for more supporters to turn up and stop moaning in what an incredibly passionate post-match interview.
Substitute Rhys Browne netted a stoppage-time winner on his debut as Barnet snatched all three points over Altrincham at The Hive.
He headed home to keep the Bees’ 100% home record this season after Harry Chapman had cancelled out Justin Amaluzor’s opener for the visitors.
The result sees Barnet sitting 6th in the National League table with 15 points from 8 games played (W5 D0 L3).
It was the club’s lowest turnout of the season, with just 1,207 fans in the stands for the midweek game, and the lowest since the game against Eastleigh at home in March 2024.
Last season they finished 2nd in the table with 86 points from 46 games played, but lost 4-0 to Solihull in the playoff semi final, which was their highest attendance of the campaign with 4,560.
Dean Brennan went on quite the rant after the 2-1 win against Altrincham on Tuesday night.
He said: We got character. We got togetherness. We’re in their camp. I don’t like the moan and groans from my supporters over here beside me, moaning get forward, screaming rubbish at me when we’re 1-0 down. We’ve just played now 6 games without a recognised centre forward. And I have to be honest with you. I think our level of performance has been outstanding. If they don’t want that, I’ll move on then. If that’s what they want. Get someone else to do the job because I’m sick and tired of it. Just a miserable moany lot. Get behind the group. Get behind the team. So I feel that way about it. I’m delighted for the boys. Delighted for the players. Delighted for our supporters that come with the Gateshead and clap us off. But I’m hearing this out here. I don’t like it. You know. Go somewhere else and be negative. It’s their money. They can do what they want, but I can say what I want on here as well and how I really feel because I don’t I don’t pull no punches. Moaning and groaning.
Interviewer: Yeah. And, obviously, just speaking on the football, for the 90 minutes, it looked like a really good battle, a really good test between 2 top teams.
Dean: Yeah. We got young lads that read the social media. I don’t read it. I’m not on it. I’ve got young lads reading social media. I’ve got stuff on social media going against my goalkeeper. Does that help? Does it? Does that help everybody? They’re all geniuses now. They wanna clap you off, don’t they? Yeah. You know what happens in life? When you’re in the tough times, you see the real characters, the real people. That’s what I’m looking for, character in this group. Character. I want fans to come with us with it. There’s a message for you. Alright? Do not edit that, by the way. I want that to go out because that’s very important because we’re very open and very honest with our supporters. But when I’m hearing on our negativity, when we’re playing well good goal by Altrincham by the way. Good goal on the counter attack. Fair play. Good goal. Good. Justin’s reply pace. And I’ve gotta listen to that moment. I’m here. Just relax. I know what I’m doing. I took this team over. Bottom of the table. Have a look where you are. Yeah? There’s a lot of other teams below us. That’s how I feel about it. I’m very, very angry and frustrated. If any fan wants to come see me, my door is open. Come in come in and see me. Have a cup of tea with me, and come and see me. And I’ll explain where we’re at and who’s injured and what’s happening. No Taveres. No Brown. No Kabamba. No Collinge. Who else is missing? Coker. Just come back. You know, get behind this young group. Look at Joe Roy tonight. Outstanding. Joe Greenwood, outstanding performance. Unbelievable. Chapman, what a player. Front character. So I want us to get behind our players, not moan at them, not seeing them or winning. I want us to be a proper football club. All I ever hear is moaning, moaning about the chairman. The beer is not good enough. That’s not good enough. Come on, man. Get behind the group. Get behind the team.
Interviewer: And you I’ve seen that in that you’re obviously…
Dean: By the way, there were only 900 fans here tonight. That’s what it was announced as well. It was 900 here. Yeah. We’re the big club, aren’t we?
Interviewer: And I’ve seen that you mentioned about about Joe Greenwood. He’s obviously had a really bright start to the season with. Three clean sheets, you know, for a team that’s obviously not the right side of the table, and yet he’s coming tonight and done a I’ve done an impeccable performance like you said.
Dean: He’s a top player. You know, we expected to lose players this year. My chairman supported me and kept him with us. You know, we got players in the last year, the contract, con college, people like that. We expected to lose them. Chairman’s torn torn down bids and kept the struts the squad strong, so I sent Joe out on loan. He listened to what I said, and he’s got some experience in the National League. He’s a good player. You know? He’s here to place people like college and that if they don’t sign new contracts, if they leave on free transfers. That’s the future of the football club. Can they not see what I’m doing? So our second half, we were out there outstanding, especially up against all the elements. And I thought our fitness levels were were top. We’re a one fit team. Even when we are losing to, like, Gateshead we kept going, kept trying. We never gave in. In every game, we haven’t given in. So we’d like our supporters not to give in, also.
Interviewer: Yeah. And and, obviously, as well, we spoke about Reece Brown before in interviews and how you’ve obviously been so impressed for of his and how what he can bring to the group. And, obviously, you’ve seen that tonight he comes on and scores last minute.
Dean: And he’s a proper player. Just gotta keep me fit. That’s the key bit. Keep him fit. We got brilliant medical centre here with TicHealth, chairman, and, we just gotta keep him fit. Once we get him and Nikki back, we’re gonna be a force. But I know this division. You can’t get too high and you can’t get too low, and I know how difficult it’s gonna be. So we move on to Braintree. Obviously, gave a good account of themselves again tonight. They were unbeaten in 4 or 5 games. Angelo’s doing a great job there. So it’s gonna be another difficult game, but it’s today is about my team, the collective of my team, and and what they’re about. And we showed character after going to Gateshead in a game where I didn’t think we should’ve lost it, it, in a game where we kept going, we kept digging deep, and we come back to let him bounce back, and that’s what good sides do. So let’s see how we get on. We’re in tomorrow. Our reserve team going tomorrow against Palace, training tomorrow, and towards the end of Friday. We make the sacrifices. We know what it takes to win football matches.
Interviewer: Yeah. And, obviously, like we said earlier about how, you know, teams have come to the hive every again this season and then felt that defeat. How important is it to keep the hive the fortress that it can be?
Dean: Yeah. It helped it helped if we brought more than 900 supporters here. You know, if we can get 2,000, that’ll help the chairman. That’ll help us get a centre forward. If people start buying more tickets and buying beers and sweets and all that. Well, apparently, that’s not good enough. All I heard is moaning. So that’d help. Yeah. Though we have to rely on Tony. Keep relying on Tony’s pocket. He’s crying prepared he’s crying kids’ money. You know, they’re inheritance. Just keep going. Come here. Spend your money. Get this place rocking. I have no problem sending players in there that are injured after 12 o’clock. Go to be with the supporters. I want to get on this. We can’t splinter away. You know, moaning about everything. Jesus Christ. Look. Give me 5.
Here’s how Twitter users reacted as the Barnet manager Dean Brennan demands for more supporters to turn up and stop moaning…
@martin_bull1: I would love to have that cuppa, would tell him what a fantastic job he’s doing, great recruitment, great football, a fantastic time to be a bees fan, he has brought this club and fans closer than they have been for a long, long time
@Sam75682334: We have to take accountability as supporters, attendances are embarrassing, atmosphere horrendous. This undermines our club massively when were progressing everywhere else. Hopefully this will make a positive difference. We’re lucky to have this man at the helm.
@BSmithy21_: 110% Spot on Gaffer. Him and the management are such a credit to this club. Look back at where we were to us now, our leader❕
@rickard_louie: He’s right 👍
@ASlipaczek: The success over the last few seasons is all down to Dean, his staff and his recruitment. Speaks true words in this interview and most fans absolutely back him in those moments. #BarnetFC
@tomslevin2: Well said deano 🔥 every word of this is facts
@barnetfan_1888: Well said, given the upward curve we have been on the last three seasons some of the miserableness and desire to moan is ridiculous
@charliecassen: The more I watch this the more I fucking love it. As I said on @beespod – remember this man got us off our death bed in 2021. We’ve won 5 out of 8. We go 1 nil down & fans start moaning & shouting abuse. (We WON btw). Deano’s right – if you don’t like it, fuck off.
@barneyphill: Sorry but as much as I love Deano he can’t go calling us out for having a small fan base. I was there last night with my boy and nephew got soaked and cheered the team on as always. The fact that we don’t have funds for a striker is on him – he signed 14 players this summer! The lopsided squad is on him as are the sometimes questionable tactics yet he says we can’t havd a moan! Deano is the best manager for us & I’m grateful for all he’s done but fans are allowed to whinge sometimes!
@antbfc: Pressure getting to DB a bit. Shame to slag the vast majority of us who are there week in week out, sure it’s just his emotions getting the better of him. Ironic as it’s the biggest club he’s ever managed!
@charliejbull: Couldn’t agree more. If Deano left there would be a downward spiral for sure. This is a tough league, we’ve got a lot of new players, it’s still being worked out, but it’s a damn sight better than Kewell and Flowers’ days that’s for sure!
@DanielS83504395: Well said, top manager. Completely agree with the point about social media. I have been supporting Barnet for 60 years and filling the ground has always been a problem, particularly after we moved to the Hive. Let’s get behind the boys. COYB 🐝
@Dickster27: Charge £10-£12 to get in and people will be more inclined to come. Every game available online now so why pay £24 to watch and £8 to park?
@CustardSplatPod: I reckon Kev’s one more “FORWARDS” shout from that fucking idiot next to the dugout before he does this. Unreal interview this by the way. Proper
@__jacklawrence: outstanding interview. One of the best Iv heard. This could easily be Maher towards some of our fans ! We fucking bossed the game last night and still heard fans moaning and shouting ‘ forward ‘ . Trust the owners , trust the manager , trust the philosophy and trust the players
@kevinlowe12345: Was only a matter of time before a manager had to come out this raw. Too many fans of clubs at this level think they’re 100x better/bigger than they are. Southend well and truly included in that btw. The moaning in the east stand is a small example. Get behind them 🦐
@spasypaddy: Finally got round to watching this. For a long time our crowd has been toxic. It’s time that changes. We play exceptional football. We have an incredible manager. A fucking fantastic squad. Let’s shut the fuck up, get into the ground and back the fucking boys. Deano is not wrong.
@Prestonoldham51: Brilliant interview this. Just pure anger after watching his side score an injury time winner. 900 moaning fans……. I would pay £1000 for a season ticket in the main stand if he become our manager. It would be absolutely box office. #oafc
