Ashton United excite fans by appointing promotion winning manager

Ashton United managed to excite their fans by appointing a promotion winning manager in Steve Cunningham on Wednesday night.

Cunningham has plenty of experience at this level of football and claimed the 2021/22 Northern Premier League title with Buxton, who have taken to life in the National League North.

He also guided the Bucks to the second round last season’s FA Cup, but it was due to personal reasons that he departed the club after the season’s title-winning season.

Cunningham will replace Michael Clegg who stepped down earlier in the week after three years of leading the Robins.

Ashton currently sit 12th, with 29 points from 24 games, including the deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player back in October.

Following the resignation of Michael Clegg on Monday, Ashton United are delighted to announce Steve Cunningham as our new First Team manager.

The former Colne, Curzon Ashton and Buxton manager comes to Hurst Cross with a wealth of experience, including winning the 2021-22 Pitching In Northern Premier League with Buxton and guiding The Bucks to the second round of last season’s Emirates FA Cup.

Cunningham left Buxton after promotion due to personal reasons at the end of the 21-22 season.

After appointing Cunningham, Ashton United Co-Chairman Jonathan Sayer said: “We’re delighted to appoint someone of Steve‘s calibre.

“Steve is a fantastic manager with a proven track record for winning in this league and above.

“We’re looking forward to the rest of the season where we still believe there’s lots to play for.”

With Cunningham’s first game just around the corner, Saturday’s trip to Warrington Rylands, the back-room staff is being assembled, but you can be there to support your new manager by getting your tickets here

In May 2022, Steve Cunningham slammed social media rumours about his Buxton exit and revealed the real reason why he quit.

In an exclusive interview with the Buxton Advertiser, Cunningham dismissed claims of a major fall-out with chairman David Hopkins.

“There was no fall out whatsoever, it is just a circumstantial thing with the travelling I have to do,” said Cunningham.

“It is hard when you are doing a two hour trip and maybe three hours back on a night. I was doing five days and two nights. Two weeks ago I clocked that I had had just six hours with my kids.

“The sort of stuff that has been thrown about is ridiculous. I have worked for the club all week after I left doing commercial work.
