Another Premier League club linked with Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones

Another Premier League club have been linked with signing Manchester United duo Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones, according to reports.

The two players, who have been dubbed outcasts, could be set for reuniting with one of their former managers in the summer transfer window.

Jones is struggling for minutes at Old Trafford behind Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, whilst Lingard has fallen behind in progress.

David Moyes’ West Ham are credited with interest in the Red Devils pair should they manage to avoid getting relegated to the Championship this season.

West Brom and Everton are also said to be keen on Lingard whilst Newcastle were reported to be planning on throwing Phil Jones a lifeline.

Should Moyes guide the club to safety, he is expected to be given time and money in order to give the squad a much needed rebuild for a better finish next season.

A list of potential transfers is being draw up and it is believed that the United pair are high up on his radar.

Though it is Jones, who has struggled for minutes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, that Moyes is wanting more so that he can strengthen his defence.

The only barrier potentially stopping from the Hammers boss from getting his man is the asking price as he only signed a new four-year deal with Man Utd last year. West Ham were also credited with an interest in Jones back in March.

Lingard has also fallen out of favour with the new-look midfield of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay all being picked over him and look set to stay for a while yet.

Both players are likely to exit the club in the next window with Solskjaer planning a big clear-out.

Would it be a good signing for the Hammers? There are some positives with experience being one of them.

As stated on the official Premier League website, Jones has played 200 times in the top-flight, helping to keep 60 clean sheets in that period.

Another plus is his defensive ability. Jones has won a total of 1051 duels in the Premier League, over 400 more than he has lost.

The only doubt would be the countless amount of fitness problems he has suffered in the past.

The centre-back has consistently missed matches due to various different issues in the last few seasons and if he can’t keep himself fit, then it might make the Hammers look for alternative targets.

JONES’ STATS:

Senior career
2009–2011 – Blackburn Rovers – 35 games (0 goals)
2011– Manchester United – 165 games (2 goals)

National team
2009–2010 – England U19 – 4 games (0 goals)
2010–2011 – England U21 – 9 games (0 goals)
2011– England – 27 games (0 goals)

Lingard has made 20 Premier League appearances this season although most of them have come from the bench. He has scored two goals across 36 games in all competitions.

The former EFL player was left out of the England squad for Euro 2020 qualifying matches in October 2019, so a move for him is really needed so that he can ignite his playing career.

LINGARD’S STATS:

Senior career

2011– Manchester United – 131 games (17 goals)
2012–2013 → Leicester City (loan) – 5 games (0 goals)
2013–2014 → Birmingham City (loan) – 13 games (6 goals)
2014 → Brighton & Hove Albion (loan) – 15 games (3 goals)
2015 → Derby County (loan) – 14 games (2 goals)

National team

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s legendary keeper Peter Schmeichel believes Solskjaer needs to clear out his squad again.

Schmeichel told MUTV: “I’m on record for saying this a long, long time, since Ole came, that his most important job is not really to sign players, it’s to get rid of players.

“There’s a few players in the squad that we absolutely do not want there.

“They’re not there to play for the badge. They’re there to create a profile for themselves.

“I was reading about one player trying to make themself a brand like Beckham which is shocking really.

“But there are players there that do not belong in the dressing room.

“And I think Ole has done really well in kind of sifting them out of the picture really, so we only get reminded that they’re there in a chat like this, or reading about the squad. I think he’s done an amazing job.”

United currently sit fifth in the Premier League and are embroiled in a tight fight for a top-four place with Chelsea, Leicester and Wolves.
