Ange Postecoglou goes winless in his first seven games as Nottingham Forest boss

More concern for Ange Postecoglou as he goes winless in his first seven games as Nottingham Forest boss, following defeat to Newcastle.

On 58 minutes, Bruno Guimarães put Newcastle in front, and curled an unstoppable strike into the back of the net.

After Mats Selz tipped over Sandro Tonali’s cross, the subsequent corner saw Nick Woltemade crash a shot against the underside of the bar.

On 84 minutes, Elliot Anderson lost the ball inside his box and then brought down Bruno Guimarães in a panic.

Nick Woltemade stepped up and sealed Newcastle’s second Premier League win of the season, confidently struck into the top corner.

Postecoglou once again was subjected to chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, this time from Newcastle fans.

The result sees Newcastle sit 11th with 9 points from 10 games played while Forest are 17th with 5 points from 7 league games, and a winless run of 7 games in all competitions for Ange.

Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to Sky Sports: “It is always tough coming here with the crowd behind them and the atmosphere but I felt we handled it well.

“We didn’t capitalise on the opportunities we needed to take and then a couple of things went against us and you don’t get the outcome you want.

“They raised the tempo in the second half. I thought we controlled the game well in the first half but we had a couple of really good moments when we had to take our chances.

Was Morgan Gibbs-White fouled in build up to opening goal? “I guess this is the world we have created where referees won’t make decisions. I think without VAR he makes a decision there but with it he lets it run. Something we have to live with.”

Surprised not have got first win yet? “Nothing surprises me in football. We have gone through this period where it is three-and-a-half weeks since I’ve come in and things haven’t gone the way we’d have loved but it doesn’t deter me. We have a couple of weeks of work with some of the lads in the international break. We will turn the fortunes around.

“It is a struggle, it is a fight there is nothing wrong with that. I could have been sat on the couch watching you guys but I prefer to be here right in the middle of it, where I can have an effect and I believe I will.”

Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It is always a difficult game to navigate up here with the atmosphere and the stadium. I thought for the most part we handled it pretty well. We nullified their main threats for the most part. We were always dangerous going the other way. We had some big moments we didn’t capitalise on and when you don’t the game gets away from you.

“The chances we did create I felt we could have executed them better. They created some chances towards the end when they opened up. It is the little moments in games that we are not capitalising on that is costing us.”

On the challenge he is facing: “I knew it was a big challenge walking in. There is nothing wrong with that. I don’t get why people think it is a burden but I love a challenge. The alternative is sitting at home watching the game and I don’t want to do that.

“We just have to get the results now and we have two weeks to get it right. If people want to assess me three-and-a-half weeks in there is nothing I can say that will change that. What I have seen and felt in this period is that we are heading in the direction I want us to. The results will come in the meantime it is a struggle and a fight and there is nothing wrong with that. We don’t want things handed on plate we have to fight for it, I have fought for things all my life.”

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels, speaking to Sky Sports about manager Ange Postecoglou: “I think we’ve done well in all the games under the new manager.

“Football is moments and you need to take them to finish the game and we haven’t taken them these last few weeks.

“It is time to deliver after the international break.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: “Good performance. Not a lot of goalmouth action in the first half so we had to be patient today. The second half was better. I thought we had control of the second half and we needed a moment to bring us the goal. Bruno’s goal was a moment of magic from an unbelievable player. He makes a difference more often than not.”

On striker Nick Woltemade: “Very well. I thought today was a good performance. He grew into the game. The penalty was very composed. A really good penalty from someone playing with confidence.

“Nick spoke to me about taking penalties. He is confident in that respect.”

On another clean sheet: “We started the season really well defensively. We have been solid and resilient. A good mix for us because you are only a goal away from winning a game.

“The break has probably come at a bad time for us with the momentum. We will take it and dust the players down and regroup.”

Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Big win. Second in win a row. Really important and tough game to come in. Good energy and that was the key point for today.

“Now we go into international break with two wins – that was really important to come into with a good position.

“We have good energy from the bench. We have done really well.

Here’s how fans reacted as Ange Postecoglou goes winless in his first seven games as Nottingham Forest boss…

@SuplexSmithy: When are the players gonna take some accountability? MGW and Ando sloppy mistakes for the goals. But yeah, Ange is to blame! #NFFC

@TrickyRedRad: MGW killed us again today. Lost it twice, for the goal. Game changed perfectly into there hands after that. First time this season we looked physically equal. Wasn’t expecting anything, didn’t get it. Need a Midfield 3 and get rid of MGW in the 10. #nffc

@Tr1ckyTrees: Anyone remember the amazing feelings from last season!? No me neither .. this is just awful 😞

@RoworthJack: Should never of sacked Nuno

@NFFCTom: Ange suggested we’re out of order on Thursday as a fan base. 7 without a win is not ok for a side that finished 7th and has since had £200m invested in it. He should surely accept it’s fair to not trust him at this stage rather than make out we’re an impatient modern fans. #nffc

@rentfreejt: If you was a forest fan singing ‘Your getting sacked in the morning’. Be ashamed of yourself it’s disgusting, that man does not deserve 12 more hours of his role in Nottingham forest’s football club! #NFFC

@MarcusHogg96: I definitely prefer to lose matches to being a decent side and winning matches. The arrogance not to acknowledge how bad things, but rather be self-important – believe me I’d rather you be sat on the fucking couch – is staggering. The sooner he’s gone the better. #nffc

@maybebrayyy: don’t worry lads he always wins a game in his second season #NFFC

@sophieb_8: all disappointed but can we see the wood for the trees? decisions made over summer have thrown us into turmoil, silly record signings and ahead of ourselves in how we should be playing. Ange thrown in & scapegoated, not even been stubborn with style of play. too much change #NFFC

@WiggumCharm:
Just a classless oaf, isn’t he?
– Doesn’t acknowledge the gravity of the situation one bit
– Always talks through the perspective of “I, me” and never “we, us”
– Would rather take cheap shots at the media than address any glaring concerns
Very, very unpalatable… #NFFC

@mynameisneil: What should have been a season building on the success of last has fallen to shit in no time. No cohesion on or off the pitch. The summer recruitment with no plan. What a mess, and all completely avoidable. #nffc
