Andy Carroll signs for Championship outfit

Andy Carroll signs for Championship outfit Reading on Monday, coming just months after he was first linked with the strugglers.

It was in August 2021 when the Royals were last in talks with bringing in the free agent, after he was released by the Magpies at the end of last season.

The forward, who has also played for Liverpool and West Ham United, as well as England, was previously in discussions according to FootballInsider, over a year-long move to the Royals.

Carroll, who came through the ranks at Newcastle, recently left the North East outfit after a two-year spell back at St James’ Park.

However, he only scored one goal in that time and failed to find the form which earned him a move to Merseyside earlier in his career.

Reading already had brought in the likes of experienced duo Scott Dann and Danny Drinkwater.

Royals boss Veljko Paunovic said on bringing him in: “This is a deal which we have been working on for some time and are confident it is the right move for both player and club. Andy is looking for a new challenge in his career and we need a player with his quality and vast experience! So this is a great match and I’m really looking forward to working with Andy over the next couple of months.”

Royals Chief Executive Dayong Pang said: “With long-term injuries to two of our key goalscorers, our strength in depth in attack has understandably been limited all season, so I am very pleased that Andy has agreed to join us. With a proven eye for goal, I am sure he will offer our first team squad something different as we approach another busy period of Championship football.”

Carroll’s summer move failed to materialise despite the speculation, with the 32-year-old still searching, until he signed the deal at Reading on the 15th of November 2021.

“Not knowing where you’re going to end up is the toughest thing,” he told The Athletic before signing for them.

“I could end up at Reading, I could end up back at Newcastle, I could end up in Turkey or the United States or wherever, and it’s just that unknown.

“The league (a club is in) doesn’t really bother me as long as the club is right for me and them, that’s what’s important.”

He has insisted that he does not want to stop playing and is keen to play football again, having found his opportunities limited at Newcastle, with just 18 appearances last season.

However, Carroll previously hinted that his next move may not be too far from his home in Essex, adding that he does not want to move his family away, with his daughter recently starting senior school.

“I don’t know where I’ll end up,” he said.

“Ideally, it would be just around the corner from me, but if not I’d be happy to travel.”

@sami_rfc4: NO FUCKING WAY

@JakeMoore_67: You know what, I’m actually happy with that.. providing he stays fit, he offers more of a threat than Puscas and we’ve lacked a proper shithouse in this team for a while. Carroll IN 🤝 #readingfc

@Jay_Evans1997: Haha no way man

@CassFox_: I’m going with a pulled hamstring, seven minutes after coming on as a sub.

@LordCKS: This can only go one of two ways. Jason Roberts esq, or they need to move another physio before in at Bearwood. I hope he’s a success, but can’t see it working due to his fitness issues. Hopefully I’m wrong #ReadingFC

@TheonlyBird: Haha this is a hilarious mid november signing but I am loving it

@Teapotstagram: I back signing him for the memes. But realistically is he really going to solve our injury crisis? Lad can’t stay fit for a few weeks #readingfc

@KieranRuffle: 5: Carroll has had to go off with an injury and is replaced by Puscas #readingfc

@NathStPaul: Said it at the time the rumour started that I am not against this at all. Short term deal, affordable and is a level above the Championship. Of course his fitness is a problem but if we can get him playing even half of our remaining games then I’ll take it! #readingfc

@Photomattic: Excited for him to be ruled out before playing a match #readingfc

@jaidandhillon: whatttt ahahahahaahah

@SKailus: Andy Carroll will be very useful if he can stay fit. But knowing us he’ll play a u23 game for match fitness and be out for 10-12 weeks. #readingfc

@BrianDa67696046: As Christmas is coming, can someone tell me the words of the Andy Carroll? URRRRZZZS!

@Reading106: As much as I love this, I hope it’s pay as you play. “We have a lot of injuries… who could we bring in?” #Readingfc

@RoyalBearC: So the team with probably the worst Injury record (well at least this season anyway) wants to sign Andy Carroll… What could possibly go wrong!!

@ethanr1871: This better not be some kind of sick joke

@KhalidElhasan__: How the mighty has fallen
