Andy Carroll was involved in a horrifying head-on crash with a Ford Fiesta as police attend the scene in the area of Romford on Saturday.
The 33 year old’s £130,000 Mercedes GLS SUV collided with a Ford Fiesta — with reports saying he shunted it 30 yards up the road.
Witnesses living on the residential street told of how the ex-Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham striker looked “dazed and in utter shock” as he got out of the car.
He then rather swiftly went to check on the condition of the three people in the red Fiesta, who were more worse for wear.
A front wheel of Carroll’s black Merc came off with the side panels and part of the bumper were also smashed.
Witnesses said Carroll, who had been at the wheel, was breathalysed along with the woman driver of the Fiesta. No arrests were made.
Carroll and a male friend with him escaped injury, but a male passenger, 50s, in the Fiesta, was taken to hospital after complaining of chest pains.
Witness Steve Garboulb saw the crash at 3:25pm on Saturday in Romford, East London, and said: “It was lucky no one died.
“The Fiesta and Mercedes collided head-on and another vehicle was hit in the carnage. It was a freak accident.”
John Cooper, who is a resident on the area, said: “I heard the most awful bang.
“I saw Andy Carroll emerge from his vehicle. He was wandering around in a daze.
“Andy was in shock but said to me, ‘What do you think of my car?’ I replied, ‘I think it’s a write-off, mate.”
Police continue to investigate the incident.
Andy Carroll in ‘horrifying’ head-on crash with Ford Fiesta as police attend scene
This comes as Carroll is nearing a potential return to Championship outfit Reading.
The 33-year-old found the net twice in eight appearances for the Royals during a short spell last season before spending the second half of the campaign with Steve Bruce’s West Brom.
It looked as though Premier League side Wolves were after the Geordie as a replacement for target Diego Costa, the former Chelsea star’s move now in place allowing Paul Ince to swoop in and pick up the tall centre forward.
Reading Chronicle state that he is expected in training and could be ready to play after the international break.
He was in the headlines earlier in the summer after reportedly ailing a medical at Belgian outfit Club Brugge. Carroll had offered a trial, because a decision was made to cancel that and the club looked elsewhere despite putting the player through physical and mental tests.
He has been a free agent since his release from the Baggies at the end of the last season.
West Brom boss Steve Bruce chose not to extend his deal at the culmination of last season. Speaking about the decision not to extend Carroll’s stay at the Hawthorns, Bruce said: “We’ve got two centre forwards, one (Kenneth Zohore) we’ve paid £8million for and the other (Daryl Dike) £7million in January.
“They’re both number nines. Andy Carroll has done great for us and he’s in better nick now than he’s been for the last few years. He’s done tremendously well but he’s unfortunate that we’ve got two centre-forwards who we hope this summer will be fit. I think I need to strengthen in other areas rather than at number nine.
“So we have to make tough decisions and believe me that was a really really tough decision because I know how popular Andy was with the fans and how popular he was in the dressing room. But I’ve got to think of the overall balance of the squad. His wages will be freed up for somebody else. That’s the stark reality of it.”
Joining Shane Long as a summer arrival up top, he would become the 12th addition to the team this season as Mark Bowen and Ince try to rebuild after trouble at the end of last season, all under a transfer embargo.
Reading currently sit 3rd in the second tier table, picking up 15 points from 8 games played, a superb starting which has took many by surprise.
