Everton man Andros Townsend takes a sarcastic swipe as ‘moaning’ Jurgen Klopp ‘gets his way’ with a rule change this week.
He aimed a playful dig at the Red boss, claiming his ranting finally meant he got his own way after the Premier League confirmed they would be implementing the five substitution rule next season.
As we know, Klopp has been very vocal when it comes to wanting more substitutions, while Pep Guardiola has also backed more changes during matches.
The rule was initially brought into football because of the pandemic in June 2020, however when clubs voted on whether it should be kept permanently last season, it was comprehensively rejected.
There were three separate voting periods but each one couldn’t get more than 14 votes, which would have been enough to implement the rule.

However, that has now changed following a Premier League Shareholders’ meeting back in March where they decided to it will be reintroduced from the start of the new campaign.
Klopp demanded the Premier League to make the change in order to protect players from sustaining injuries, with the likes of Thiago and Virgil van Djik picking up long-term issues. Yet Townsend reckon the league gave in due to Klopp “constantly banging on and on” about it.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Townsend said: “I love how Jurgen Klopp has found a way to get his way.
“He’s been moaning for years. They have been pushing back and finally they have given in and given him his five subs. And he will probably still use two or three in the biggest games.
“But, hey, who are we to argue with him?
“I think in the biggest games Liverpool and City, they use one or two subs. They don’t use the full three subs.
“I think it’s the games against Crystal Palace or Brentford, where they can’t break teams down, it’s 0-0, they have 11 behind the ball. Right, can we bring on five world-class internationals who are fresh who can change the game. Can we bring them on to break down this stubborn defence? And that’s where I think it becomes a bit unfair.
He continued: “I don’t think it makes it less competitive. It’s still going to be the most competitive league in the world. I just think it gives those top sides an extra advantage.
“Hopefully my side is one of those teams that will have the advantage with the squad that we’re looking to build.
“And, on a personal level coming back from an ACL injury, five subs will probably suit me. But I just think, on the whole, it suits your Jurgen Klopps and your Pep Guardiolas who have 30 world-class internationals.”
After saying Klopp had got his way, Townsend was then questioned as to how much sway he believes Klopp has.
“Clearly a lot,” he replied.
“I think we saw last season, and even the season before, just the constant banging on, banging on about votes, on votes, on votes, getting pushed back and then, all of a sudden, they announce the five subs bench.
“I think as well, last season, again, moaning about the schedule, moaning about this, moaning about that… all of a sudden BT Sport put a Liverpool game on Saturday night, which I’ve never seen before in the Premier League.
“So obviously all of this moaning and moaning puts pressure on the authorities to give him what he wants, and he has got what he wants on many occasions.”

@ChrisH_Comments: Think this has gone under the radar a bit – it is a massive advantage for the elite clubs in PL games against non-elite clubs. Anyone who isn’t biased can see this and it’s another rule that lawmakers have brought in that doesn’t help the sport.

@stevemilchard: I can’t believe no other club came up with the idea of 5 subs but with 2 of them being in the under 23’s being mandatory. Would have given Klopp what he says he wants but not what he really does, which is an unfair advantage.
