Alleged first half racist abuse from Leeds fans towards Arsenal substitutes bench

Alleged first half racist abuse from Leeds fans towards Arsenal substitutes bench was made aware to fourth officials by Rob Holding.

With about half an hour played at Elland Road, the 26 year old Gunners sub led discussions with the refereeing staff, as the defender got up to speak to the fourth official amid allegations of abuse.

The matter is being investigated following the serious allegations made by the Arsenal bench, who have understandably been left shocked on the sidelines.

The game was televised on Sky Sports in the only Premier League game of the day with Arsenal storming to a 3-0 scoreline by half time.

Arsenal broke the deadlock 16 minutes in after Leeds twice gave the ball away.

Bukayo Saka won the ball on the right wing and charges forward. He found Alexandre Lacazette and then there’s a possible Leeds foul on the edge of the box.

It wasn’t given and then Adam Forshaw, in the box, lost the ball to Lacazette with Gabriel Martinelli hammering home the loose ball.

Just over 10 minutes later, Leeds lost the ball again and Gabriel Martinelli found the net again.

The Gunners won the ball in the centre circle and Granit Xhaka played a lovely through ball to Martinelli.

The Brazilian raced into the box, holding off a defender and then waited for Illan Meslier to go down before clipping the ball over the keeper.

On the 42nd minute, Leeds’ defence continued to be all over the place.

Bukayo Saka got the ball on the wing and cut in. The ball broke to Alexandre Lacazette and then came back to Saka.

He fired a shot which was deflected off a defender and flied into the bottom corner.

The last time Leeds conceded three goals at home before half-time in the Premier League was also against Arsenal on 1 November 2003. They lost 4-1 that day.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness, speaking to Sky Sports: “Leeds play like they’re in the school playground, they really do.

“When you’re a defender you have decisions to make. As a defender you must decide what’s the most dangerous thing. That’s where your concentration needs to be.

“3-0 does not flatter Arsenal. You have to say Leeds are an absolute shambles, an absolute shambles.

“They’ve got young players and injuries, but the way they’ve been asked to play, they’re not going to survive in this league.”

Joe Gelhardt was just about to be replaced for Leeds… then he goes and wins a penalty on the 74th minute. Ben White lunged in and brought down the youngster. Raphinha tucked it home to make it 1-3.

Emile Smith Rowe made it 4-1 in the 84th minute, Tyler Roberts lost the ball in midfield and Arsenal decided to break. Martin Odegaard cruised forward and clipped a clever pass into the path of Smith Rowe, who let it bounce and hammered a shot past the keeper.

Before full time, Koch and Lacazette clashed off the ball and the Arsenal forward went down holding his head. It was in this fixture last season when Nicolas Pepe was sent off for a headbutt but this time Andre Marriner wanted to get on with the game.

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville said at the end: “I have to give my man of the match to Gabriel Martinelli. Two goals, he’s been outstanding all night and a real problem for Leeds. For me, the best Arsenal player on the pitch.”

Twitter users reacted over the alleged first half racist abuse from Leeds fans towards the Arsenal substitutes bench…

@_Abundant1: I was about to say I feel sorry for Leeds but if their fans are being racist then I hope Arsenal give them 7

@LouisEllerby: Dirty Leeds, nothing more nothing less

@JoeAfc1: Leeds fans being racist? Yeah let’s beat them 15-0

@LS11LUFC: If you are still wondering why our players take the knee before the match, today should clarify why it’s needed. It’s been a poor performance but shouting racist abuse is as unacceptable as it is pathetic. Racists are not welcome in any capacity and do not represent Leeds United.

@jord__ma: Disgusting. Make an example of them. They aren’t Leeds. Fair play rob holding

@vsburna: Arsenal players being told to stop celebrating in the corner with the racist Leeds fans rather than dealing with the fans themselves… lol

@Silkyremontada: Big up to rob for reporting it

@hazzascfc: how is this still happening

@Eggans2: Just gets worse

@EGTVEgal: Big up Rob holding for bringing the racist abuse to the attention of the fourth official and the manager that is disgusting from the Leeds fans #AFC #LEEARS

@jessiehosking: Rob Holding raising awareness of racial abuse to the fourth official, that’s my defender

@niallmcgirr1: So rather than actually deal with the racists in the corner of the stadium, marriner tells Saka not to celebrate the goal in that part of the pitch. Disgraceful from Leeds and the ref players shouldnt fear racial abuse! #LEEARS

@now_arsenaI: Arsenal players were told not to celebrate in the Leeds corner for the third goal to prevent further racist abuse. Scum. Absolute scum.

@c_ellis92: As for the Leeds “fans” being racist. You aren’t a fan. You don’t deserve that seat at Elland Road. Fuck off out of our club. #LUFC

@FZAFC83: I love Rob Holding. standing up for our black players even if they don’t understand what’s been said or want to say anything. Disgusting from Leeds fans if true. Not surprised since they defended a racist c*nt. Let’s hit them for another 3 in the 2nd half.

@phat_natsAFC: If I find out Leeds fans are making racist comments towards Saka I’m driving up the M1 and throwing hands.
