Absolute carnage as sub Pascal Struijk nets twice in late comeback win for Leeds vs Sunderland

It was absolute carnage as sub Pascal Struijk nets twice in a late comeback win for Leeds vs Sunderland on Monday night.

Wilson Isidor put the Black Cats ahead in the first half, however Leeds hit back late on with Struijk coming off the bench to head in an equaliser on the 78th minute, before he then struck again in the 95th minute to send the hosts back to the top of the Championship table.

Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post best summed up the winner, tweeting: “Holy FUCK. Rothwell skins a man and whips the ball for the far post and Struijk got his head on it. Who cares? Subs are on the pitch. Farke is on the pitch. He gets wiped out by someone in the celebrations. Elland Road just exploded.”

Leeds United’s double goalscorer Pascal Struijk speaking to Sky Sports:

“Really big. I think it’s very important we got the three points today. It’s a big step in the season.

“We want to keep the distance with the ones that are chasing the same thing as us.”

On whether he thought he would score twice: “No, maybe one. I could see from the bench that sometimes there were chances from corners.

“We had a lot, we didn’t capitalise on them. So maybe one but you only dream of scoring more goals as a centre-back really.”

On the race for promotion: “Like I said before, to take a big step like this means a lot, especially the way we did it, scoring in the last minute.

“These goals you celebrate differently.”

Leeds United’s Ethan Ampadu speaking to Sky Sports:

“The team worked so hard and a little bit of poor defending from me made them go 1-0 up. I think first half we controlled the game.

“We set the tempo, we were trying to play. When the other team sits back, we’re used to facing that and it’s just about trying to break them down.

“We always have the confidence, whether that’s the first minute or the 95th minute that we can score.

“Thanks to Pascal for saving me, I’ve told him probably about four times now. I might tell him again tomorrow morning.

“It can be frustrating but we always back ourselves and have loads of confidence.”

On the reaction to the winning goal: “Eruption, chaos, I don’t know what was going on. A lot of joy.

“It was a good feeling just to share with the fans. They want this just as much as we do so to deliver at the end might be a little bit sweeter sometimes.”

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris told BBC Sport:

“The crowd, the energy of the stadium was always increasing and we couldn’t break it.

“We can be proud of our way of playing. We were brave and played as a team but without the small details that can change the dynamic.

“We need a bit more depth in our squad, we have three or four players who weren’t fit but they can be back next week and make a difference. We are still in a good place and the team is still improving.

“You have to admit that Leeds were very good this evening. Sometimes you can’t find solutions.

“You can learn from these experiences and you can see that they had more experience than us.

“I’m stable emotionally now. We played a good first half. We’re still a young team.

“The players are disappointed. They want to win and be promoted.”

Leeds boss Daniel Farke has been speaking to BBC Radio Leeds:

“These type of wins are the best kind you can have in football for the supporters and the whole group.

“They are priceless points. It’s a great night for everyone connected to Leeds United.

“We haven’t won anything yet but to do this against one of the best sides in the league in a difficult game.

“We were there with almost 70% possession so it was well deserved but once they led it is so difficult and complicated.

“You have to be patient to create and score when a team is sitting back deep.

“You have to fight in order to score a goal and this is what we did today.”

Farke, who received a yellow card for his celebrations following the winner:

“I have to check if I am suspended for the next game.

“I had only one yellow card before this season and now I have had a couple of doubtful ones.

“If I miss the game at Bramall Lane because of a celebration to a 95th minute goal… then I have to adapt to the rules. We live by the rules but I doubt if it makes sense. It is what it is.”

Twitter users reacted to the absolute carnage as sub Pascal Struijk nets twice in a late comeback win for Leeds vs Sunderland…

@FTM1042: I want leeds to get promoted back to premier league because you could feel the energy & the atmosphere rise when you equalized & your a very good side with a lot of individual brilliance. We just didn’t have the same energy levels as we showed in the first half.. SAFC fan here – Leeds are a top quality side it’s as simple as that. Felt you were very aggressive out of possession as well there were certain periods where we could not get out of our own half. Passionate fanbase as well. All best for season hope you get promoted ✊🤝

@BennyBoyTips: Well played. Brilliant game to watch from a neutral perspective. Some of the best fans I’ve seen this season 👏

@simonmc68: I, like every other Leeds fan, was thinking “why are we bringing on Rothwell & Struijk when we’re chasing the game”. Brilliant substitutions!

@RaphinhaSzn: Farke done well there. He’s not just swopped wingers and hoped for the best as he’s been guilty of in the past. He’s seen exactly what was needed and made the right changes. Gives me hope as I was seriously questioning his tactically agility but hats off tonight boss

@LUFC__Nick: UNBELIEVABLE!! Rothwell from set pieces and his delivery are the best in our squad. Was appalling to watch in the first half. Farke corrected his mistakes and paid off. WE MOVE ON AND ON AND ON

@CJNLTD: Follow Citizens Journalism Network for the latest news worldwide!

@Lufcburny: Struijk has to start every game, only one who can head a ball. Ampadu back to mid 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

@NotSammieDingle: Not Farke Out tonight then?

@lewismckenna01: Far too good for this league, go and smash it Leeds, hopefully we pull off a miracle and finish 2nd 🤝

@bungholio81: Rothwell has to start over Gruev, what a difference he made! 💪

@aesf104: My Dad died on Friday evening unexpectedly and was a lifelong Leeds fan. He will be buzzing with this result wherever he is… well done Pascal, well done Leeds #MOT

@maisieWDCFC: Real champions performance. Credit to Sunderland they neutralised us. We never gave in, no Gronto, thought DF had missed a trick, how wrong was I!!! Fantastic gutsy performance, made up. Better than the 7-0, won ugly 👊🏻💪😍

@CoelDixon: Shows the difference between us, we never looked like we’d get the three points or even a point, very poor from us but well played

@mkdlufc: I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you

@willswinney04: Well done lads best team in the league by a mile don’t know why we sat off like that as we always do but teams who go up score late goals when they need to so fair play good luck in the prem

@ThatCovPod:
Two teams going right at it
Fans standing all around the ground
A cracking atmosphere
No VAR
Proper entertainment
The Championship is so much better to watch than the Premier League these days.
