Abdul Fatawu throws himself to ground ‘like a FIFA glitch’ as Leicester fall to defeat at Millwall

Abdul Fatawu amused fans after he throws himself to ground ‘like a FIFA glitch’ as Leicester City fall to defeat at Millwall.

He had been reacting to Leicester coming agonisingly close to levelling the scoreline in stoppage time but were denied by a goal-line clearance from Billy Mitchell to keep out substitute Kelechi Iheanacho’s header.

Ryan Longman’s stunning effort on the 59th minute sealed a vital Lions win and damaged the Foxes’ promotion hopes on Tuesday night.

Coming into this game, back-to-back victories had given Leicester a boost in hope in their bid for promotion, and lifted them back to the top of the Championship table.

But they slipped up again, with a defeat that could prove costly, while it’s a welcome win for Millwall as they’re in need of the points for a number of reasons, picking up their a first win in five matches to go four points clear of the relegation zone.

Leicester’s defeat will have been welcomed by Ipswich and Leeds as the three-horse race for automatic promotion enters the final straight.

Leeds played out a 0-0 draw at home to Sunderland, while Ipswich play on Wednesday against mid-table Watford.

Millwall: Sarkic, Leonard, Tanganga, Cooper, McNamara, Longman (Norton-Cuffy 90′), Mitchell, Saville, Honeyman (Esse 51′), Flemming (De Norre 90′), Obafemi (Bradshaw 76′)

Subs: Bialkowski, Hutchinson, Mayor, Emakhu, Harding

Leicester: Hermansen, Ricardo Pereira, Faes, Vestergaard, Doyle (Justin 73′), Ndidi (Praet 73′), Winks (Daka 88′), Dewsbury-Hall, Akgün (Fatawu 62′), Vardy (Iheanacho 73′), Mavididi

Subs: Justin, Coady, Albrighton, Choudhury, Stolarczyk

Leicester boss Enzo Maresca said: “It’s a tough result. We tried [in the] first half but struggled a little bit. They defended very well, very narrow, very close. It was difficult to find space and solutions. [In the] second half, as we expected and has happened many times, we found more spaces.

“It was better for us, but even with that they were defending fantastically. We created chances – we had the Kel (Kelechi Iheanacho) one, the Ricky (Ricardo Pereira) one, the Pat (Patson Daka) one also.

“For us, for everyone, it’s the same. Every team is struggling to win games. The Championship is very tough.

“It’s a matter of balance. When you win you feel there and when you lose or drop points, you feel a little bit down. But now in this moment there is not time to think too much.

“It’s a matter of recovering energy, being focused on the next one and going again on Friday. And in the last five games, try to win as many as we can and then we’ll see at the end.

“For us, for everyone, it’s the same. Every team is struggling to win games. The Championship is very tough, especially the last eight to 12 games, because you are at the end of the season.

“Now every team is playing for some target, so it becomes even more difficult. It’s important especially in the moment we are in now at the end of the season. We knew already and we need to be patient until the end to try to win games.”

“Firstly, it’s so Millwall-like to lose to Rotherham and Huddersfield, both in the last minute, and then beat the league leaders.

“That’s what this club does. Not just this group. The last 30 years of Millwall Football Club.

“We scored a goal that would win any game at this level. I thought it was an excellent Millwall performance. To play against arguably the best team in the league and limit them to very little was so impressive.

“We’re moving in the right direction. What I’m seeing in the group is a lot of positives.”
