Aaronson takes advantage of stunning Mendy howler before Leeds extend lead vs Chelsea

Aaronson takes advantage of a stunning Mendy howler before Leeds go on to extend their lead vs Chelsea at Elland Road on Sunday.

We all knew we would be in for a tasty clash with these two sides going up against each other and that is what we got.

Just 36 seconds it took Chelsea to go close. Gallagher made a big impact sliding in Sterling into space down the left – he cut in past two defenders and it opened up from 20 yards. He went for the far corner but missed the target.

Then on the 4th minute, there was good pressure from Leeds, who pin Chelsea in. James picked up a loose ball and fired one from the angle but boy that is over the bar.

Gallagher got caught in his own half. The play developed to Harrison, who went for the curler but Mendy read it.

Chelsea looked so dangerous in transition with Sterling creating the space and the ball found Loftus-Cheek in space at the back post. He took about 7,000 touches and the chance was forced behind.

The 15th minute saw Chelsea finding so much space down the Leeds right. Cucurella clipped one over the top for Sterling, who chopped inside again and this time found the far corner.

However, the flag was up. And the replay showed the assistant was bang on.

Aaronson broke the deadlock on 34 minutes. What is the Chelsea goalkeeper playing at here? Madness! He tried to dribble past Aaronson about four yards from his own goal but the attacker was so sharp and hard to pass. He made the tackle and then has the simple task of running the ball in.

Sky Sportsā€™ Adam Bate at Elland Road: ā€œHorrible by Mendy but doesnā€™t that just sum up everything that Marsch wants to see from this Leeds team. Aaronson had surrendered possession but his reaction was to chase down the goalkeeper and he gets his reward. Marsch has been urging his team forward at every opportunity. These fans are loving it.ā€

Sky Sports’ Don Goodman: “It’s just madness from an absolutely brilliant, brilliant goalkeeper. he’s juts made a crazy decision.”

There was no reaction from Chelsea. Leeds with their tails up. Sterling made a foul about 22 yards out down the left and was booked for the act.

Then the 38th minute saw a second goal in five minutes to completely and utterly rattle Chelsea. Harrison delivered from the free kick that Sterling was booked for and Rodrigo rose like a salmon to flick a sensational header past Mendy.

Sky Sportsā€™ Adam Bate at Elland Road: ā€œWow, the noise in here. Chelsea overwhelmed.ā€

The half time whistle blew on a game that had been full-blooded and brave from Leeds and they have got their rewards. Aaronson was gifted the opener when chasing down and robbing Mendy before Rodrigo planted a fantastic header home for the second. Sterling looked lively for Chelsea but the balance in midfield looked off and the wing-backs offered nothing.

Sky Sportsā€™ Adam Bate at Elland Road: ā€œLots to take in after that 45 minutes. Gallagher has found the tempo tough in that deeper role. That is an issue for Chelsea. So is the fact that it is not flowing down the right. James might be more effective further forwards so that could be something for Tuchel to change?

ā€œAs for Leeds, there has been loads for Marsch to enjoy and his compatriots have been the catalyst for much of it ā€“ from Adamsā€™ fierce tackle on Gallagher early on to the sheer industry of Aaronsonā€™s performance. Will they be able to keep it up?

ā€œThat is the key question of the game now. Leeds were two up against Southampton last time out and were not able to see it out. Is that a warning that they will heed and not let happen again or is it an indication that the tempo could dip and let Chelsea back in?ā€

Leeds did further damage on Chelsea on the 69th minute with brave play again to throw many players forward whilst holding on to a lead. That lead became an unassailable one.

James clipped the ball in from the left and Rodrigo forced the ball towards goal. Harrison was in space and reacted quicker than Chelsea’s defence to hammer the ball home.Ā

He deserved that goal. A sublime performance from him – and Leeds too who are up to second in the table by full time.
