The Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles Finals have long been a highlight of the tournament for many fans worldwide. The iconic grass courts of the All England Club have been the stage for some unforgettable moments, intense rivalries, and historic victories.
Even in the last few years, the finals of the 2020s – despite the absence of the tournament in 2020 – have showcased some of the greatest tennis talents of our time, from seasoned champions to rising stars.
Avid tennis lovers, loyal supporters of players, and even those tuning in due to a free bet, have all been kept on the edge of their seats for these great finals.
So, we thought it’d be good to reflect on the recent matchups that have rounded off the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles.
Wimbledon 2020: No competition due to COVID-19 pandemic
The first tournament of the 2020s was actually cancelled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This marked the first time since World War II that Wimbledon was cancelled.
The All England Club made the difficult decision to prioritise the health and safety of players, staff, and fans, over having the games go ahead. Although other Grand Slam tournaments were either postponed or played under modified conditions, Wimbledon’s tradition and prestige meant it was best to wait until conditions were safer.
Wimbledon 2021: Novak Djokovic v Matteo Berrettini
In 2021, Wimbledon returned better than ever, with fans eager to witness world-class tennis action. The final saw Serbian legend Novak Djokovic take on Italian rising star Matteo Berrettini.
Berrettini was playing in his first Grand Slam final, whilst Djokovic was looking to win his third consecutive Wimbledon championship – and sixth overall.
Although winning the first set, Berrettini was unable to conquer Djokovic’s experience and resilience that shone through as he mounted a comeback, claiming a four-set victory (6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3).
This win also marked Djokovic’s 20th Grand Slam title, equalling the record held by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the time.
Wimbledon 2022: Novak Djokovic v Nick Kyrgios
The 2022 final pitted Djokovic against the enigmatic Australian, Nick Kyrgios, in a highly anticipated showdown.
Kyrgios, known for his flamboyant and unpredictable playing style, pushed Djokovic to his limits with powerful serves. After losing the first set, however, Djokovic’s consistency and mental fortitude allowed him to recover and secure a four-set victory (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6).
With this win, Djokovic claimed his seventh Wimbledon title, further cementing his dominance on grass.
Wimbledon 2023: Carlos Alcaraz v Novak Djokovic
In 2023, Djokovic’s reign was challenged by a new star – Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz.
Alcaraz faced off against the Serbian in an epic five-set thriller that captivated the tennis world, showcasing his all-court prowess, fearless shot-making, and peak athleticism.
Ultimately, Djokovic was unable to secure his 8th Wimbledon title in this dramatic final (1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4), and Alcaraz’s victory signalled a changing of the guard in men’s tennis.
Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz v Novak Djokovic
The most recent final saw a rematch between Alcaraz and Djokovic, and fans were on the edge of their seats to see if we’d get a replay of the last matchup, or another result.
Alcaraz once again displayed his growing maturity and skill in the sport, taking advantage of his opponent’s age and endurance challenges. In a match filled with high-intensity rallies and some very clever shot-making, Alcaraz prevailed once again in four sets (6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2).
This reinforced his position as one of the sport’s brightest stars and confirmed a shift in the tennis hierarchy.
