10th tier club win promotion after going 19 points clear at top of table

10th tier club Hartpury University win promotion after going 19 points clear at top of the Hellenic League Division One table.

They well and truly smashed it this season, picking up 88 points from 34 games played, winning 28, drawing 4, losing 2, 104 goals for, 19 against and and goal difference of +85.

A 4-0 win against Moreton Rangers on Friday night meaning that Hartpury could no longer be caught, meaning they won the title and will play in the Hellenic League Premier Division (9th tier of English football) next season.

Head coach Dr Martin Longworth said: “Yeah boys have been brilliant been waiting for it now obviously it’s quite tough at times when kind of got games in hand games in hand but yeah the boys have been absolutely brilliant.

“Came in obviously on the back of a little bit of a failure from us last year finished second losing the playoff final and from minute one they’ve been absolutely brilliant.

“Going away from home now I think that’s only I think we said to lads only lost one game away from home only conceded nine goals that away form has been what’s really been great this season.

“And then yeah at home again scoring lots of goals on the back of again a fantastic Vase run again a county cup run and also we’ve got next week when we’ve got the national finals for our senior boys.

“Just been a brilliant season and yeah thank everybody for their support, cheers.”

Groundhopper blogger The Mowdog gave his thoughts on the game…

“This was never going to be an easy task for Rangers against league leaders Hartpury and the difficulty was exacerbated by conceding an early own-goal, then two more goals well before the interval.

“Despite being the dominant outfit, Uni didn’t actually create a huge number of scoring opportunities, although home goalie Jon White did make a couple of similar smart saves from Hartpury right-back George Sims after the break.

“In truth though, Uni won at a canter, fully able to replace their lively right-flank attacker Louis Manning and rapid two-goal forward King Baidoo well before the finish. Indeed, Manning scored the other Hartpury goal, whilst Baidoo’s pace was always tough for a keen but overworked Rangers defence to cope with.

“All of that said however, Moreton generally competed very well and made a strong showing after half-time, during which right defenseman Sam Sherpa-Moore showed up well. One felt some sympathy for Rangers’ striker Jake Peters however, whose evening was fraught with frustration, feeding only on titbits.

“Just three times were the hosts able to get in efforts at goal and by the end of the fixture, Uni were coasting and getting ready to watch ‘keeper Stephen Sarkodie attempt to release stubborn gushes of bubbly from a bottle in order to celebrate their league Hellenic League Division 1 title win on the pitch in front of about eight or nine hardy spectators. I loved that…”
