South Yorkshire Police make 8 arrests during and after Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United

South Yorkshire Police make 8 arrests during and after Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United over a number of alleged incidents.

South Yorkshire Police have confirmed the following to The Star, Sheffield the day following the Steel City derby:

– Three people were arrested on suspicion of assaulting one of their officers.

– Another was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

– Two people were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

– One person was arrested on suspicion of affray.

– One person was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY STATEMENT:

Sheffield Wednesday F.C. strongly condemns the unlawful crowd incidents that occurred during Sunday’s derby match against Sheffield United F.C. at Hillsborough involving both home and visiting supporters.

A number of incidents were reported of objects being thrown from the stands during the match.

The Club has a zero-tolerance approach to crowd incidents, anti-social behaviour and disorder of any nature by supporters at both home and away matches.

Not only is this behaviour wholly unacceptable, a breach of EFL Ground Regulations and the law, such behaviour posed a serious danger to the players on the pitch, playing staff on the sideline and to fellow supporters.

A robust investigation is currently underway and the Club is working together with the relevant authorities in order to identify those responsible.

Once identified, perpetrators will face the full force of Club sanctions (including a stadium ban, where applicable) and potential prosecution by the relevant authorities.

Despite continual previous warnings, a tiny minority of supporters continue to tarnish the good name and reputation of Sheffield Wednesday. As a result, the Club is now the subject of another FA investigation.

We thank the overwhelming majority of supporters whose behaviour continues to be exemplary whilst following the Owls, while reiterating our zero-tolerance policy to those who undermine and tarnish the Club’s reputation.

Sheffield United have last laugh after beating Sheffield Wednesday following pre-game taunts

Meanwhile, Gemma Alexandra posted via Facebook: “I want this “man” named and shamed. Make it as hot as you can.

“Today I took 3 of my children and nephew to their first derby game. When Sheffield united scored misiles were thrown and then this individual decided to spit on the children. I looked him square in the eye and called him a few words, and reminded him that they are kids. That didn’t matter though, he got a beer bottle and aimed it at Harry, it hit his head and has caused him mild concussion. Harry is 11 years old, Wednesday mad. Now he never wants to go again.

“Now I know a lot of united fans who I love and respect. We all have banter. This is too far! I want this man’s name, a conviction and ban because this is not what football is about!!!!

“Harry has concussion currently, he is doing ok.

“What’s not ok is grown men throwing things and spitting on kids. Ages 17,16,13&11. All got spit in their hair and Harry a beer bottle thrown directly at him.

“There were 5 fans in total. They all moved back when they saw me get my phone out. This one however stood out by far with the consistent spitting then throwing the bottle.

“I’ve had more footage sent to me and I won’t stop until all 5 of those fans are identified and given criminal convictions and bans from football.

“I’m a passionate fan myself but not once have I thought about throwing objects or spitting on people, let alone kids after we’ve scored.

“Why not just enjoy celebrating the goal like a decent football fan? There’s no need!!!

“Whilst I have a huge passion for Wednesday and some hate to united, I do not use these minority to tarnish all other fans. I know a lot of united fans myself, some family members. And no way would they go off like this. This is never ok!!”

Kevin Burke wrote: “Just to let everyone know that the fella who assaulted my Grandson has been identified. All details have been passed on to clubs and authorities. Please don’t anyone try to deal with this for us as we wud hate for any of u to get into trouble. I’m sure the that the authorities will deal with it accordingly. Many thanks to the Blades fans for identifying the individual for us. Respect where it’s due.”

Gemma Alexandra added: “He’s spoken with my dad on the phone. It’s definitely him that’s been found.

“He’s admitted to the spitting but denies throwing the bottle. He went on to say to my dad that spitting is ok at football 😳🙈

“He is panicking about losing his season ticket and getting banned. He’s asked if he can write a letter of apology to Harry to have this provoked. My dad and myself have declined as Harry wishes for no contact from him as he has terrified him.

“Oh yeah let’s set an example of we can all do what we like at football then if we write a letter of apology after eh? 🤨

“Also keen to find the male with his hood up. And another male of a stocky build wearing a cream/beige jumper/jacket as they were also spitting at the kids”

“I’d like to thank every single person who has come forward with information on the man that’s assaulted my kids and nephew today. We have his name and work place along with his history of criminal behaviour. By the sounds of it, a ban will do his fellow fans a favour as he’s a bellend at home games too.

“Harry is ok. He has a bump to his head and bruising is forming on one side of his face alongside a headache but he’s otherwise ok. Understandably he is shaken up. His big sisters are angry and also slightly shaken but will be ok.

“I’m hopeful that now we have his information that both clubs can work together to make sure justice is done. I would like to set my kids an example that these people don’t belong in football and punishments are given to the likes of morons they’ve witnessed today.”

Twitter users give their reaction while South Yorkshire Police make 8 arrests during and after Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United…

@griff_we: @fa: @EFL Please investigate a pyrotechnic being fired at Sheffield United players from Sheffield Wednesday ‘Fans’

@GrantR_1867: Can’t wait for the club statement, FA investigation & fine. All for what? It just makes the rest of us look like idiots.

@justunited1889: As a blade I do not condone this behaviour absolutely disgusting and should be ashamed of himself a full grown man behaving like this deserves a ban banter and fun and games with the derby but spitting on people 🤢 vile man

@WayneJWFC88: What is wrong with people 🤷‍♂️

@twizzy15g: No place for that. Rivalry aside! Absolute bellend…

@Villamad5: @swfc What do you pay your stewards for?

@telkev1980: Saw him spit , the dirty vile bastard I’m all for banter but that’s disgusting 🤮

@Gangstaswag1: Steward right next to him does nothing?

@nathanswfc04_2: same bloke shouted UNITED in the face of a 5 year old wednesday fan

@CalWAFC19: why do clubs do this. Who thought putting the away fans on top of the home fans or vice versa. When you separate them there’s less violence, stuff like this doesn’t happen and it can enhance the atmosphere or quieten down the away atmosphere smh 🤦‍♂️

@MarshallJames1: Not good, no one wants to see that, however much we hate each other. I hope he gets banned. ⚔️

@1875will_: Don’t give a fuck what the occasion is if you’re spitting at a football match you’re an absolute cunt

@carl_herrick: No excuses and hope he gets dealt with but let’s not paper over the coin throwing bottle throwing and fireworks thrown at blades players. Hope that gets dealt with as well

@TomW18: @swfc anything you can do to help this 11 year old attend a game again? Would be horrendous if football lost a fan due to the behaviour of one cretin.
