Robbie Savage responds to being linked with manager’s job at League One club

Macclesfield boss Robbie Savage responds to being linked with manager’s job at League One club Northampton Town earlier this week.

His side are currently top of the Northern Premier League Premier Division (7th tier) with 50 points, 15 points clear of second place, 1 loss in 19.

Now he has been linked with the a job in the EFL, as per Footy Insider. Here’s what Macclesfield boss Robbie Savage had to say…

Interviewer: “So, Robbie, you’re flying this Macclesfield manager. It’s been a great experience for you so far. And when you’re doing well as a coach, people take notice. Right? People start to take notice. So the future of Robbie Savage, the manager, what does it look like? Are we gonna see you moving up the leagues maybe, Robbie? What what are we looking at here?”

Robbie: “This is where your journalism comes in. You’re trying to, you know, get me get me to answer questions. Do I give the manager? I’ve not seen it. They’re already talking about, oh, you know, do I say, when you say I’m doing well, we’re doing well, the players, my staff, because it’s about we. It’s not about I, and they’re embracing what we’re asking them to do. You know, we’ve got a good lead at the top.

“You know, what people will say, though, I should be at the top of the league with Macclesfield because we’ve got a big budget because, you know, people say it’s step 3. He’s not ready for for a move to league football. Well, 32 years of experience as a player, as a professional, as a director of football, as a in the media. Yes. I’m a young up and coming manager in terms of, you know, what I’ve done so far.

“I’ve done nothing yet. We’ve done nothing yet. But it’s nice to be linked with jobs. Of course, it is. All I can say is I’ve gotta keep doing we’ve gotta keep doing what we’re doing.

“From the outside, people will say, well, it’s it’s step 3. You know, what does he know about league football? Well, I’ve watched so much football in the last 4 years, especially with my son playing in League One. Watched every Reading game. Know every team. Know how teams play. Know every player.

“And that’s not just from in that league, that’s from Premier League down to step 3, because I have to because of recruitment. So we’re in a good place at Macclesfield. It’s great that we gain acknowledgment for the what we’re doing so far, but the narrative will be Mac should be top of the league because they train twice a week in the mornings, because they’ve got a large budget, because they got the best players.

“But Macclesfield didn’t go up last season. Do you know what I mean? We were very unfortunate, lost out in the playoff final, so unlucky anything can happen on the day. We were the 2nd best team in the league last year, but, inevitably, didn’t go up. The aim is to get promoted this season.

“And if speculation comes with that, then it means me and my team are doing a good job. But as I say, we’ve not won nothing yet. But the speculation is nice for my team.”

Interviewer: “You’re also personally tied to Macclesfield, so it’s a it’s a different thing for you, Rob, right, in that regard? Is that your you know, you’ve got personal ties there.

“But for you, you as a manager, do you see Robbie Savage, maybe with Macclesfield, moving up into the leagues in the future, Robbie, or or is that what you would you have ambitions to do that?”

Robbie: “My ambitions as a player were to play the highest ever I could play, and that was in the Premier League. That was you know, I didn’t play in the Champions League, but I played in Europe. I played for my country, captained, 4 Premier League clubs, and the aim was to play as high consistently as I could. And I achieved that In the media, my aim was to try and be as the best I could be presenting the one of the biggest, if not, well, the biggest football phone in the UK.

“So my aim as a manager is to manage at the highest level that may be, and to see if I can. I believe I’ve got great traits, my management style, my man management getting the best out of players, encouragement, emotion, you know, can be an upside, but it could be a downside. So, again, I want to manage the highest I can, and if that’s with Macclesfield, great. But as I say, the expectation…

“I’m in a different position now than I’ve ever been. In all my clubs I played for, staying up mid table, trying to get in the top 6 was the goal. And if we finished as I did with Blackburn, 6th place playing in Europe, it was unbelievable season.

“So right now, I’m at a club where we’re expected to win every single week, and that’s a different proposition for me. That’s a different mentality. How I, enforce that into the players, you know, this is the mentality we’ve gotta have. We are like, you know, a Man City or an Arsenal or a top team at these levels.

“Of course, we are because everybody wants to beat it. So my mentality is out to change from going out on a Saturday to thinking, you know, if we draw against an Arsenal or a or a Liverpool or a Manchester now and I played, it’ll be a great result. We have to win the games now. So I’m in the opposite corner now. So, again, it’s been great for me.

“It’s been great for my staff and my players, but inevitably, of course, I wanna manage at the highest level I can be. And I’m not arrogant enough to think that just because I played in a Premier League, I should be managing in league football right now. No. I I’m managing at a level that I should be because I’ve I’ve done nothing yet. We’ve done nothing yet.

“And until, you know, until I’ve got any more news for you right now with Macclesfield manager, I’m thoroughly, thoroughly enjoying it and striving and embracing it, and I love it.”
