Mousinho and Lampard in fiery exchange and Portsmouth boss fumes at penalty controversy

John Mousinho and Frank Lampard got in a fiery exchange and the Portsmouth boss also fumes at penalty controversy.

Coventry came away with a 2-1 win, with both of their goals coming from Brandon Thomas-Asante, extending their Championship lead at the top to four points.

His first goal came from a well-executed corner in the first half, followed by a fine finish in the second half.

There was also a heated exchange occurred between managers Frank Lampard and John Mousinho after a denied penalty for Portsmouth.

Tensions spilled over off the pitch after Yang Min-hyeok sent a ball in from the edge of the box, with it striking the arm of Coventry’s Jay Dasilva.

The Fratton Park faithful were is disbelief as referee Gavin Ward waved away the penalty appeals. Mousinho vented his frustration, while Lampard ended up getting into a heated exchanged with the Portsmouth boss and the fourth official had to separate the two.

Pompey got one back with Makenzie Kirk scoring a late goal, but Coventry held on for the win.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

“It’s obviously a disappointing result but I think it was a fair result overall.

“We didn’t quite get going in early parts of the first half, the most frustrating thing is probably the nature of the goals, we huffed and puffed and got ourselves back in the game but it was too little too late.

“We should have had what was a clear penalty to me, the ball strikes his arm way outside of his body and I’d expect one of the officiating team to pick it up.

“We had a really good spell at the start to the second half, the timing of the goal was poor and the manor in which we conceded was poor too.

“Coventry are a really good side and despite making changes they’re still so strong, I expect them to be right up there.”

Mousinho told The News‘I thought it was a penalty, we have seen it back, we’ve had the luxury of looking at the replay and his arm’s way out – and it hits his arm.

‘The referee didn’t actually see it, he was looking in the box for anything in there. He didn’t see it and no-one else picked it up, it’s one of those things that we didn’t get.

‘I suppose that sometimes football is such an intense game and really dynamic, he has taken his eye off it for a couple of seconds. If that happens, then there are four officials out there to hopefully pick it up.

‘One of the linesmen or the fourth official could have spotted it, I suppose, but they didn’t pick it up. Who knows if the game would have been different there, but it’s one of those we clearly at the time were upset about.

‘I was just trying to talk to the fourth official, that was all, I wasn’t allowed and the fourth official didn’t deal with it. Frank interrupted, which is the polite way of putting it. It was impossible for me to speak to the fourth official.

‘That was one penalty appeal, the other one with the challenge with Minhyeok and Bobby Thomas, I can see why it wasn’t given.

‘The other one down the far end (in the second half), it definitely hits the player’s hand but he’s going to ground, I don’t think it’s a penalty.

‘I thought the first one was. At the time it was goalless, maybe it does make a difference, but Coventry are a good side and deserved to win the game.’

Mousinho added: ‘Coventry caught us in a different way, they were slightly more direct and, having that pace and power up top, we struggled to deal with that and ultimately they came away with a win.

‘I do think we could have scored more than a goal – and they could have scored more too.’

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard told BBC CWR:

“It was a very good three points. It’s a really tough place to come. They beat Middlesbrough who were top, we felt the pain last year of coming here [Coventry lost 4-1 at Fratton Park last term]; good team, can give you problems.

“When we change system a bit, you need focus. And with the two-day turnaround we’ve had, it was a lot work but they went out and implemented it great.

“The only thing was that last minute because we probably should have two goals, the way were playing, we were looking so, so dangerous every time we attacked.

“I’m really pleased with the lads, they’re the ones doing it. So it was a really good night for us to win the game.”

Lampard called Mousinho’s view “incredible” and accused him of pressuring officials, but insisted no bad blood remains.

The fourth official had to intervene as verbal exchanges persisted. Lampard said he wouldn’t behave the same way.

He said: ‘I haven’t seen it (the penalty appeal) again, but John managed to have an incredible viewpoint on it and thought it was a penalty.

‘I didn’t think it was at the time – and that’s the end of it.

‘Look, I think it’s one of those stadiums. The crowd are behind the team and there can be pressure on the referee. The added pressure on the fourth official, I don’t think is necessary.

‘It’s the emotion of the game, I understand it. I’d would do similar in different terms. Emotions get the better of you when you want something, but I don’t think it (the penalty appeal) was clear at all.

‘This is the game. I don’t know what John would say, but we are working for our football clubs. We work and prepare for it and we have our emotions. We give them and people give them in different ways.

‘If someone wants to stand by the fourth (official) and give their pressure, whether that’s tactical, that’s the emotions and I understand it. That’s not my style, but I understand it.’

He added: ‘The whole team, everything, you know we changed the shape because we felt it was the best way to approach the game considering a bit of respect for Portsmouth, but we wanted to do it in an aggressive way which we thought would be the best opportunity to win the game.

‘We worked around personnel, probably, keeping some players fresh, (Luke) Woolfenden and Ellis Simms coming in and the general work ethic throughout.

‘It’s not a nice place to come and we felt that coming here last year. The only disappointment is the last minute-and-a-half, because I think we were good for our 2-0. We maybe could have scored some more and I’m really, really pleased.’
